" 'What honor and recognition has Mordecai received for this?' the king asked." (v. 3)

For Reading and Meditation:
     Esther 6:1-3

The great King Xerxes, despite his comfortable bed and luxurious surroundings, is unable to sleep! It has nothing to do with the food he has eaten at the banquet. God is at work in his life to see he is kept awake. We ought never to forget that the Almighty can reach into a human heart at any time. Remember how He came to the godless Belshazzar and, in the midst of his banquet hall, signalled the downfall of his kingdom by writing these startling words on the wall: "You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting" (Daniel 5:27). King Xerxes looks for something to read. He calls for his servants to bring him the palace records and the chronicles of the court, only to find that, as he pores over the records of the past few months, there is an entry concerning the plot to assassinate him. Xerxes inquires whether the man who uncovered the plot - Mordecai - has been rewarded for this act of loyalty, and a search through the records shows that he has not. The king is somewhat surprised that no recognition has been given to Mordecai and plans to rectify the matter right away. Can you see what is happening here? The hand of destiny is at work and the stage is being set for the last few scenes in the drama of God versus Haman. I heard a preacher say: "I feel sorry for anyone who tries to set out and involve himself in a program that defiantly flies in the face of God." So do I. God wins every argument, every battle, and every cause. All the time!

O Father, the way Your power and wisdom combine to resolve problems is so awesome and astonishing. Why do I tremble so much before my problems when I have such a God as this? Forgive me and help me come through to a greater trust. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
