Verses 1-11

Psalms 95:0

Introduction - Hebrews 4:7 says “in David” and quotes from Psalms 95:7-8, which means David was the author of this psalm.

Hebrews 4:7, “Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David , To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”

Psalms 95:1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

Psalms 95:2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

Psalms 95:2 Comments - Begin time with God in thanksgiving, and then enter into praise (Psalms 100:4).

Psalms 100:4, “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”

Psalms 95:3 For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

Psalms 95:7-11 Old Testament Quotes in the New Testament - Psalms 95:7-11 is quoted in Hebrews 3:7-15

Hebrews 3:7-15, “Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.”

Psalms 95:7 For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice,

Psalms 95:8-9 Comments - The Hebrew word for “provocation” is “meribah” ( מְרִיבָה ) (H4808). The Hebrew word for “temptation” is “massah” ( מַסָּה ) (H4531). This is a clear reference to Exodus 17:1-7, when the children of Israel tempted the Lord at Rephidim for water to drink.

Exodus 17:7, “And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah , because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?”
