Verse 1

spake. See note on Leviticus 5:14 .

Verse 2

children = sons.

make a singular vow = make a special vow. Hebrew "separate a vow" because a vow was separated into negative or positive, restraining or promising, i.e., "binding" or "loosing".

persons = souls. Hebrew. nephesh. App-13 .

Verse 4

it = that soul. Compare note on Leviticus 27:2 .

Verse 9

men. Some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, read "one".

offering. Hebrew Korban. App-43 .

Verse 10

alter. Hebrew. malaph, to change for the better. Compare Psalms 55:19 .

change. Hebrew. mur, to change for the worse: note the Introversion. g | alter (bad for good). h | change (good for bad). h | good for bad. g | bad for good.

Verse 11

offer = bring near. Hebrew. karab. App-43 .

sacrifice = Hebrew. korban.

present = make it stand, as in Leviticus 27:8 .

Verse 12

as thou, &c. = as thou, O priest, valuest it so, &c.

Verse 13

at all redeem it. Figure of speech Polyptoton ( App-6 ). Hebrew "redeeming he will redeem it". Well translated by "at all". See note on Genesis 26:28 . Hebrew. ga'al. See note on Exodus 6:6 .

Verse 14

sanctify = set apart. Hebrew. kadash. See note on "holy", Exodus 3:5 .

his: i.e. his own house, and what was therein.

Verse 16

homer. Hebrew. homer, as in Numbers 11:32 .Isaiah 5:10 . Ezekiel 45:11 , Ezekiel 45:13 , Ezekiel 45:14 .Hosea 3:2 . To be distinguished from 'omer, in Exodus 16:16 , Exodus 16:18 , Exodus 16:22 , Exodus 16:32 , Exodus 16:33 , Exodus 16:36 . See App-51 .

Verse 21

devoted. Hebrew. haram, denotes a total and complete separation, which does not admit of redemption. First occurance of haram. It is rendered "devoted" only in this chapter (six times) and once in Numbers 18:14 .

estimation = valuation.

Verse 26

Only = nevertheless. Rendered in Leviticus 27:28 , "notwithstanding".

is = it [is].

Verse 30

or. Some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, The Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziel Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate, have this "or" in the text.

Verse 31

man. Hebrew. 'ish . App-14 .

Verse 33

passeth under the rod. The custom of counting was for the animals to pass through a small opening, and to be counted with the rod as they passed. Every tenth one was to be taken and marked; and not to be chosen (Leviticus 27:33 ). This custom is referred to in Ezekiel 20:37 , i.e. once more claimed and marked ac belonging to Jehovah.

Verse 34
