Verse 1

land. Heb 'erez = Canaan.

Verse 2

earth. Hebrew = ground or soil, 'adamah, as in Exodus 23:19 ; Exodus 34:26 . Leviticus 2:12 ; Leviticus 23:10 . Numbers 15:20 , Numbers 15:21 .Numbers 18:4 .Proverbs 3:9 , Proverbs 3:10 .

basket. Heb men'e (woven), only here and Deuteronomy 28:5 , Deuteronomy 28:17 .

to place = to cause to dwell.

Verse 3

profess = declare.

this day. See note on Deuteronomy 4:26 .

Verse 5

speak and say. Note the idiom, generally rendered "answer and say", where the first verb must always be rendered according to the context. Here "confess and say".

Syrian = an Aramaean: i.e. Jacob.

ready to perish = perishing. Genesis 42:1 , Genesis 42:2 .

mighty. Some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, Targum of Onkelos, The Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziel and Septuagint, read "and mighty". Note the Figure of speech Polysyndeton ( App-6 ), thus produced.

Verse 7

we cried. See Exodus 2:23-25 ; Exodus 3:7 , &c. Psalms 107:6 .

Verse 10

land. Hebrew. 'adamah = ground or soil, as in references on "earth" in Deuteronomy 26:2 .

Verse 12

tithing all the tithes. Figure of speech Polyptoton ( App-6 ) = carefully and completely tithed thy increase. Compare Deuteronomy 14:28 , Deuteronomy 14:29 .

Verse 13

hallowed = holy.

transgressed = passed over. Hebrew. 'abar,

Verse 14

mourning. Hebrew ' avon , a Homonym: here = suffering, or sorrow (as in Genesis 35:18 (margin), and Hosea 9:4 ), but = might in Genesis 49:3 .

for the dead. Probably = defilement for touching a dead body.

Verse 15

holy. See note on Exodus 3:5 .

as = according as.

a land. Heb erez , the land of Canaan

Verse 16

statutes and judgments. See note on Deuteronomy 4:1 .

soul. Hebrew. nephesh . App-13 .

Verse 17

avouched = avowed.

and. Note Figure of speech Polysyndeton ( App-6 ) in verses: Deuteronomy 26:17-19 .

Verse 18

peculiar = as a treasure. Compare Deuteronomy 7:6 , and see note on Exodus 19:5 .

Verse 19

as = according as. This is the end of the fourth address. See note on Deuteronomy 1:1 .
