Verse 1

the Are came down: i.e. to consume the sacrifices. See note on Genesis 4:4 . This is complementary to 1 Kings 8:63 , 1 Kings 8:64 .

sacrifices = victims. Hebrew. zebah. App-43 .

Verse 3

children = sons.

mercy = grace.

Verse 4

offered = sacrificed. Hebrew. zebach. App-43 .

Verse 5

God. Hebrew. ha-Elohim = the [true] God. App-4 .

Verse 7

hallowed. See note on "holy "(Exodus 3:5 ).

offered = prepared. Hebrew. 'asah . App-43 .

Verse 8

the feast: i.e. of Tabernacles.

congregation = assembly, or muster.

the river = torrent, or Wady. Hebrew. nahal.

Verse 12

appeared to Solomon. This was thirteen years after the dedication. Compare 2 Chronicles 7:1 with 2 Chronicles 8:1 . 1 Kings 6:37 ; 1 Kings 9:1 . The fire from heaven was the immediate answer to Solomon's prayer. This later answer shows that the prayers of God's people are ever fresh before Him.

Verse 14

which are called by My name = upon whom My name is called.

Verse 17

as = according as.

Verse 18

covenanted = confirmed by covenant.

fail thee = be cut off from thee.

Verse 20

nations = the peoples.

Verse 21

an astonishment. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), App-6 = a cause of astonishment to others.

Verse 22

evil. Same as "wicked", 2 Chronicles 7:14 .
