Piel שִׁחֵת
(1) trans., to destroy, to ruin, either by laying waste, as a country, a region, a field, Genesis 9:11, 19:13 Joshua 22:33; 2 Samuel 24:16; Jeremiah 12:10, or by pulling down, as walls, a city, Genesis 13:10; Ezekiel 26:4 or by wounding, Exodus 21:26 or by killing, both individuals, 2 Samuel 1:14, and whole peoples, Genesis 6:17, 9:15 Numbers 32:15; Isaiah 14:20. Metaph., Amos 1:11, שִׁחַת רַחֲמָיו “he destroyed (i.e. suppressed) his mercy.” Ezekiel 28:17, שִׁחַתָּ חָכְמָֽתְךָ עַל־יִפְעָתֶךָ “thou hast destroyed thy wisdom, because of thy beauty;” thou art so taken with the latter, that thou hast neglected the former.
(2) to act wickedly, for the more full שִׁחֵת דְּרָכָיו Exodus 32:7; Deuteronomy 9:12, 32:5. Comp. Hiph. No. 2.
Hiphil
(1) i.q. Piel No. 1, to destroy, either by laying waste and destroying, as a land, a kingdom, Jeremiah 36:29, 51:20 a city, Genesis 19:14; 2 Kings 18:25 or by killing, as a man, 1 Samuel 26:15 enemies, 2 Samuel 11:1 or by harming in any manner whatever, Proverbs 11:9. הַמַּלְאָךְ הַמַּשְׁחִית the destroying angel, 2 Samuel 24:16 and simply הַמַּשְׁחִית Exodus 12:23, is the angel of God who inflicts calamities and death upon men. אַל תַּשְׁחֵת (destroy not) in the titles of Psa 57:1-11, 58, 59, 75, seems to be the beginning of a song, to the tune of which those Psalms were to be sung.
(2) הִשְׁחִית דַּרְכּוֹ Genesis 6:12 הִ׳ עֲלִילוֹת Zephaniah 3:7 to act wickedly, and without the acc. id., Deuteronomy 4:16, 31:29 Judges 2:19; Isaiah 1:4. Compare הֵרֵעַ. In the words אִישׁ מַשְׁחִית Proverbs 28:24, and בַּעַל מַשְׁחִית Proverbs 18:9, מ׳ appears to be a subst. (see מַשְׁחִית No. 1 ), a man of destruction, i.e. in chap. 28, act., a destroyer, a waster; but in chap. 18, pass., one who brings destruction on himself, one who wastes his own goods, a prodigal.
Hophal הָשְׁחַת to be corrupted, Proverbs 25:26; Malachi 1:14.
Niphal
(1) to be corrupted, e.g. by putridity, Jeremiah 13:7 in a moral sense, Genesis 6:11, 12.
