(1) death, sometimes used as personified (Psalms 49:15). כְּלֵי מָוֶת deadly weapons, Psalms 7:14 יָשֵׁן מָוֶת to sleep the sleep of death, Psalms 13:4. בֶּן־מָוֶת 1 Samuel 20:31, 26:16, and אִישׁ־מָוֶת guilty of death, liable to be put to death, 1 Kings 2:26; 2 Samuel 19:29. Poet. for the dead, Isaiah 38:18.
(2) the place or abode of the dead, i.e. Hades, Job 28:22 whence שַׁעֲרֵי־מָוֶת the gates of death, of Hades, Psalms 9:14 חַדְרֵי־מָוֶת the utmost recesses of Hades, Proverbs 7:27.
(3) fatal disease, pestilence, Jeremiah 15:2, 18:21 43:11 Job 27:15, compare θάνατος, Revelation 6:8, 18:8 Ch. מוֹתָא, and Germ. fchwarzer Tod, used of the fatal disease of the middle ages, [which was also called in English the Black Death].
