Hiph`il give thanks, confess (originally acknowledge ?) is commonly derived, perhaps from gestures accompanying the Acts , see Thes Lag Or. ii. 22, yet connection uncertain; Aramaic Pa`el וַדֵּי, Aph`el אוֺדִּי confess, , id.; but Ethiopic accuse, perhaps also from gesture; Palmyrene מודא render thanks, often in votive inscriptions, see Vog on No. 79; עבד ומודא Vog No. 101 = εὐχαρίστως ἀνέθηκε; מודן כל יום Vog No. 93. 1; ** Palmyrene ידתא pious, read ירתאנה) SAC80 also Id JQ 1904,593. ידתא pious Vog No. 29) —

(1) to profess, to confess; perhaps properly, to show or point out with the hand extended; from the idea of the hand being cast forth, i.e. extended (see Kal; comp. שָׁלַח יָד and יָרָה, Kal and Hiphil, to cast, and thence to shew by the extended hand). Arab. ودى Conj. X.; Syr. Aph. id. Constr. followed by an acc. Proverbs 28:13 and followed by עַל (concerning), Psalms 32:5.
(2) to give thanks, to praise, to celebrate, since thanksgiving and praise naturally follow the acknowledgment or confession of benefits received; followed by an acc. Genesis 29:35, 49:8 Psalm 7:18 30:13 and לְ of pers. Psalms 75:2; 1 Chronicles 29:13; Ezra 3:11. הוֹדָה שֵׁם יְיָ to praise the name of Jehovah, 1 Kings 8:33 Ps. 54:8 לְשֵׁם יְיָ id., Psalms 106:47, 122:4.
Hithpael הִתְוַדָּה (Vav being taken in the place of Yod) i.q. Hiphil.
(1) to confess, prop. to confess concerning one’s self, to shew one’s self as guilty. Eth. አስተቀደየ፡ to accuse, to criminate; properly, I believe, to object, cast against; (Germ. vorwerfen, from the idea of casting; ውዴት፡ an accusation, Borwurf), Daniel 9:4 followed, by an acc. of the thing, Levit. 5:5 16:21 26:40 עַל of the thing, Nehemiah 1:6, 9:2.
(2) to praise, to celebrate, followed by לְ 2 Chronicles 30:2.
