זָעַק fut. יִזְעַק imp. זְעַק inf. זְעֹק i.q. צָעַק (which latter word is peculiar to the more ancient books of the Old Test. while on the other hand זעק, ܙܥܰܩ is more common in Chaldee [and Syriac]. In Arabic both occur, the same as in Hebrew, سعق and زعق, also ذعق), to cry out, to exclaim, especially for sorrow, as complaining and imploring aid. אֶל is prefixed to the person implored, Psalms 22:6, 142:2 Hosea 7:14 לְ 1 Chronicles 5:20 in the acc. Judges 12:2; Nehemiah 9:28. עַל is prefixed to the cause of complaint, Jeremiah 30:15 לְ Isaiah 15:5; Jeremiah 48:31 מִלִּפְנֵי 1 Samuel 8:18 it also stands in the accusative, as in Habakkuk 1:2, where both constructions are combined, אֶזְעַק אֵלֶיךָ חָמָם “(how long) shall I cry unto thee concerning violence?” comp. Job 19:7.
Niphal, the passive of Hiph. No. 3, to be called together, Judges 18:22, 23 Judges 18:23 hence to assemble selves, 1 Samuel 14:20; Judges 6:34, 35 Judges 6:35.
Hiphil.
(1) i.q. Kal, to cry out, but properly to occasion a cry, Job 35:9 to proclaim; used absol. Jonah 3:7.
(2) to call, to call upon, followed by an accusative, Zechariah 6:8.
(3) With reference to many it signifies, to call together, to assemble, 2 Samuel 20:4, 2 Samuel 20:5; Judges 4:10, 13 Judges 4:13.
