Pi`el separate, explain, so Aramaic מְּרַשׁ especially Pa`el; Syriac separate, distinguish, explain, compare Mandean, Nö M 221); —
Qal Infinitive construct ׳לִפְרשׁ לָהֶם עַלמִּֿי י Leviticus 24:12 (P) to declare distinctly to them.
Niph`al Participle נִפְרָשׁוֺת Ezekiel 34:12 read probably שׂוֺת-, see פרשׂ.
Pu`al Perfect 3 masculine singular מֹּרַשׁ Numbers 15:34 (P) what should be done to him had not been distinctly declared; Participle מְפֹרָשׁ Nehemiah 8:8 made distinct (compare B Aram Ezra 4:18), see BeRy Kö Einl. 99, > interpreted, Ke and others, Berliner T. Onk ii.74.
II. [מָּרַשׁ] verb Hiph`il pierce, sting (?) (compare Assyrian paruššu, staff (which pierces); Aramaic פרשׁא, (in Lexicons) ox-goad); — Imperfect 3 masculine singular יַפְרִשׁ Proverbs 23:32 (כְּצִפְעֹנִי, "" כְּנָחָשׁ יִשָׁ֑ךְ), of wine.
III. פרשׁ (√ of following; compare Aramaic מְּרַת Pa`el (rare) cause to break or burst forth (a serpent its brood), מַּרְתָּא dung; Syriac Pa`el rip open, = 1. מֶּרֶשׁ; Arabic IV. rip open stomach, and scatter contents (compare VII), = I. מֶּרֶשׁ).
[מְּרַשׁ] verb make distinct (compare Biblical Hebrew (chiefly late)); —
Pa`el Passive participle Ezra 4:18 made distinct (Biblical Hebrew Nehemiah 8:8; ᵑ7 Late Hebrew).
פָּרַשׁ prop. to cleave (see Hiphil); hence
(1) to separate, to distinguish (i.q. Ch. and Syr.; whence פָּרוּשׁ, ܦܰܪܺܫܐܳ a Pharisee, i.e. separated, singular).
(2) to declare distinctly, to define, compare נָקַב No. 2, Leviticus 24:12.
(3) to expand, to spread out, specially the feet in riding on horseback (see פָּרָשׁ ), compare the quadrilit. פַּרְשֵׁד and פַּרְשֵׁז.
Niphal, to be dispersed, Ezekiel 34:12, where, however, many copies, both MSS. and printed, have נפרשׁות, which is more suitable to the usage of the language, see פָּרַשׂ.
Pual, pass. of No. 2, to be distinctly said, Numbers 15:34; Nehemiah 8:8, “and they read in the book of the law מְפֹרָשׁ (Vulg. distincte, i.e. word by word, Syr. faithfully), and they gave the sense, and they explained what they read,” compare Ezra 4:18. Others (whose opinion has of late been defended by Hengstenberg, De Authentia Dan. p. 199) interpret this “with a translation,” sc. in Chaldee; but see Gesch. d. Hebr. Spr. p. 45, 46; and note 51. See also the use of the noun פָּרָשָׁה.
Hiphil, to pierce, to wound, Proverbs 23:32. (Syr. ܐܰܦܪܶܫ, Arab. فرث id., ܦܪܳܫܳܐ a goad.)
Derivatives, פָּרָשׁ, פֶּרֶשׁ, פָּרָשָׁה.
