Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

זָכַר fut. יִזְכֹּר (Arab. ذَكَرَ, Syr. and Ch. ܕܟܪܰ, דְּכַר), meminisse, recordari, reminisci, to remember, to recollect, to bring to mind (compare as to the distinction between these [Latin] words, Cic. Lig. xii. 35, and Doederlein Lat. Synonyme und Etymologien, i. 166 [“The origin seems to lie in the idea of pricking, piercing, comp. kindred דָּקַר; whence זָכַר membrum virile; … the idea of memory then may come from that of penetrating, infixing, compare Ecclesiastes 12:11. A different etymology was proposed by me in Monumm. Phœn. p. 114, viz. that as in Athen. i. 1, סכרis written for זֶכֶר memory, perhaps זָכַר is primarily i.q. סָכַר to shut up, and then to keep, to preserve; compare שָׁמַר No. 2. But the other view is favoured by the noun זָכָר.” Ges. add.]). Followed by an acc. Genesis 8:1, 19:29, etc.; more rarely by לְ Exodus 32:13; Deuteronomy 9:27 Psal. 25:7 136:23 בְּ Jeremiah 3:16 followed by כִּי Job 7:7, 10:9 Deuteronomy 5:15. It signifies especially

(a) to remember, to be mindful, i.e. to retain in memory, Psalms 9:13, 98:3 105:5, 42 Psalms 105:42; 2 Chronicles 24:22. Exodus 13:3, זָכוֹר אֶת הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה “be mindful of this day;” 20:8. זָכַר אֶת הַבְּרִית to be mindful of the covenant, Genesis 9:15 Levit. 26:42 Amos 1:9.

(b) to bear something in mind, to account, to consider (bedenken). Deuteronomy 5:15, “account that thou wast a servant in Egypt.” Deuteronomy 15:15, 16:12 24:18. Job 7:7, זְכֹר כִּי רוּחַ חַיַּי “consider that my life (is) a breath.” Psalms 103:14.

(c) to contemplate things called back to memory, i.e. recordari. Psalms 119:55, זָכַרְתִּי בַלַּיְלָה שִׁמְךָ יְיָ “I remember thy name, O Lord, in the night.” Psalms 119:52, 143:5 63:7 (d) to recollect, reminisci, ἀναμιμνήσκειν, in memoriam revocare, to call back to memory. Opp. oblivisci. Genesis 40:23, וְלֹא זָכַר שַׂר הַמַּשְׁקִים אֶת־יוֹסֵף וַיִּשְׁכָּחֵהוּ. Verse 14 Genesis 40:14, 42:9 Numbers 11:5; Ecclesiastes 9:15; Job 21:6; Jeremiah 44:21 (syn. הֶעֱלָה עַל לֵב). Often with the added idea of care, again to care for some one (i.q. פָּקַד), Genesis 8:1, 19:29 30:22.

(e) Followed by a dative of the person and an acc. of the thing, to remember something either for the advantage or the disadvantage of another, jemandem etwas gedenken; for good, Nehemiah 5:19, זָכְרָה לִּי אֱלֹהַי לְטוֹבָה כֹּל אֲשֶׁר “remember for me, O my God, all things which I have done (that thou mayest at some time) requite (them).” Nehemiah 6:14, 13:22 for evil, 13:29.

(f) It is also referred to future things, like reputare, and respicere, meminisse, in the common expressions respice finem, memento mori. Lamentations 1:9, “and she did not remember (meditate on) the end.” Isaiah 47:7. Hence, to meditate, to think on, to attempt something, auf etwas denken.
