I. תֹּ֫פֶת see תוף.
תָּפַשׂ fut. יִתְפֹּשׂ.
(1) to take hold on any one; followed by an acc. Genesis 39:12 (with בְּבֶגֶד by the garment). 1 Kings 18:40, בְּ Isaiah 3:6 any thing, followed by בְּ Deuteronomy 9:17. Hence to take men in war, 2 Kings 7:12 towns, Joshua 8:8; Deuteronomy 20:19. Figuratively used תָּפַשׂ שֵׁם יְיָ Proverbs 30:9, to take hold of the name of Jehovah, i.e. to do violence to the name of God by perjury, well rendered by. Luth. fich an dem Ramen Gottes vergreifen (compare כִּחֵשׁ in the former hemistich).
(2) to hold, as a city, Jerem. 40:10 hence, to handle, to wield, as a sickle, Jerem. 50:16 a bow, Amos 2:15; Jeremiah 46:9 an oar, Ezekiel 27:29 the harp, Genesis 4:21. Figuratively, to handle the law (as a priest), Jeremiah 2:8.
(3) to inclose gold (in Gold faffen), to overlay. Part. pass. תָּפוּשׂ זָהָב overlaid with gold, Habakkuk 2:19 compare אָחַז No. 5, 6.
