Haph`el bring low, humble: Perfect 2 masculine singular הַשְׁמֵּלְתְּ לִבְבָח Daniel 5:22 thou hast not humbled thine heart; Imperfect 3 masculine singular יְהַשְׁמִּ֑ל Daniel 7:24, Infinitive לְהַשְׁמָּלָה Daniel 4:34, Participle מַשְׁמִּ֑ל Daniel 5:19, all with accusative of person bring low, put down.
שָׁפֵל fut. יִשְׁפַּל inf. שְׁפַל, Arab. سَفَلَ, سَفُلَ to be depressed, to be or become low, used of a mountain, Isaiah 40:4 of a wood, Isaiah 10:33 a city, 32:19. Metaph. to be depressed, is used of
(a) men who are cast down from a high rank, Isaiah 2:9, 11, 12, 17 5:15 10:33.
(b) of the voice, both when low, Isaiah 29:4 and altogether suppressed, Ecclesiastes 12:4. Inf. שְׁפַל רוּחַ to be cast down of spirit, Proverbs 16:19. Compare שָׁפֵל.
Hiphil
(1) to depress, cast down, make low, (opp. to הֵרִים), Psalms 18:28, 75:8. Intrans. to be cast down (pr. to cast (one’s self) down), Job 22:29. Followed by another verb it assumes the nature of an adverb, Jeremiah 13:18, הַשְׁפִּילוּ שֵׁבוּ “humble yourselves, sit down,” i.e. sit down in a low place (feßt euch niedrig); Psalms 113:6.
(2) to cast down, as walls, Isaiah 25:12.
