(1) to gush out, to flow out abundantly, Psalms 78:20. גֶּשֶׁם שֹׁטֵף an overflowing shower, Ezekiel 13:13, 38:22.
(2) to inundate, to overwhelm; used of a river, Isaiah 30:28, 66:12 metaph. of an army, Daniel 11:10, 26 Daniel 11:26, 40 Daniel 11:40. Followed by an acc.
(a) to overwhelm any thing, Jeremiah 47:2 and more strongly to overwhelm and swallow up with water. Psalms 69:3, שִׁבֹּלֶת שְׁטָפָֽתְנִי “the flood has swallowed me up;” verse 16 Psalms 69:16, 124:4 Isaiah 43:2; Song of Solomon 8:7.
(b) to sweep away with a flood, Isaiah 28:17; Job 14:19, “the flood sweepeth away the dust of the earth;” Ezekiel 16:9 and on the contrary
(c) to bring in as with a flood. Isaiah 10:22, כִּלָּיוֹן חָרוּץ שֹׁטֵף צְדָקָה “the destruction is decreed, bringing in justice as with a flood,” i.e. overwhelming the wicked with deserved punishment. צְדָקָה is accus. governed by the verb שֹׁטֵף.
(d) to wash any thing, Leviticus 15:11; 1 Kings 22:38.
(3) Metaph. to rush swiftly (as a horse), Jeremiah 8:6. Compare No. 1.

(1) to be overwhelmed (with a hostile force), Daniel 11:22.
