(A) fem. רָעָה adj. evil, bad
(a) physically as of an animal, bad cattle, Leviticus 27:10; Deuteronomy 17:1 bad waters, 2 Kings 2:19, etc.
(b) ἠθικῶς, wicked, evil, of the manner of thinking and acting, Genesis 6:5, 8:21 1 Samuel 25:3. לֵב רָע an evil heart, Jeremiah 3:17, 7:24. רַע בְּעֵינֵי פ׳ i.e. what is unpleasing to any one, Genesis 38:7 often in this connection, הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהֹוָה what was displeasing to Jehovah, 1 Kings 11:6, 14:22 more rarely followed by עַל Ecclesiastes 2:17 followed by לִפְנֵי Nehemiah 2:1. Specially
(aa) noxious, hurtful. חַיָּה רָעָה an evil beast, Genesis 37:33. דָּבָר רָע an evil, i.e. a hurtful thing, 2 Kings 4:41.
(bb) רַע עַיִן envious, malignant, Proverbs 23:6, 28:22.
(2) evil in appearance, deformed, especially when followed by מַרְאֶה Genesis 41:3.
(3) unhappy, unfortunate, of a person, Isaiah 3:11 compare verse 10. Jeremiah 7:6, לְרַע לָכֶם “that it may go ill with you,” for לִהְיוֹת רַע לָכֶם (compare טוֹב No. 1), Jeremiah 25:7.
(4) sad, of the heart or mind, Proverbs 25:20 of the countenance, Genesis 40:7; Nehemiah 2:2.
(B) subst. evil, badness, especially in an ethical sense, τὸ κακόν, Genesis 2:9; Deuteronomy 22:22 עֲצַת רָע evil counsel, Ezekiel 11:2 אַנְשֵׁי רַע evil men, Proverbs 28:5 also wickedness, malice, Genesis 6:5. In this sense there is more frequently used the fem. רָעָה, which see.
I. רֵעַ (from the root ר֯וּעַ, noise, outcry (Lerm), Exodus 32:17; Micah 4:9. The noise of God is thunder, Job 36:33, יַגִּיד עָלָיו רֵעוֹ “he declares to him (to man or to his enemy) his thunder.”
II. רֵעַ (from the root רָעָה No. 3) for the more full רֵעֶה, with suff. רֵעִי, רֵעֲךָ, רֵעוֹ Jerem. 6:21 but much more in use is רֵעֵהוּ, plur. רֵעִים; with suff. רֵעֶיךָ; רֵעֵהוּ (for רֵעֵיהוּ Job 42:10; 1 Samuel 30:26); רֵעֵיהֶם m. a companion, a friend, with whom one has intercourse, Job 2:11, 19:21 Proverbs 25:17 implying less than אֹהֵב Proverbs 18:24. Followed by dat. (like the Greek ὁ ἐμοὶ φίλος), Job 30:29, רֵעַ לִבְנוֹת יַעֲנָה “a companion (i.e. like) to ostriches.” Proverbs 19:6. Friend or companion is also said of
(a) a lover, one beloved of a woman. Song of Solomon 5:16; Jeremiah 3:1, 20 Hosea 3:1 compare רַעְיָה.
(b) any other person, any other of the human race, ὁ πλησίον (Nächfter, Mitmenfch), Exodus 20:17, seqq.; 22:25. Hence when preceded by אִישׁ, alter, alter, one, another. Judges 6:29, וַיּאֹמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵהוּ “they said one to another.” Genesis 11:3; 1 Samuel 10:11, 20:41. Also used of inanimate things, Genesis 15:10. Compare אָח No. 6. More rarely when not preceded by אִישׁ Isai. 34:14, שָׂעִיר אֶל־רֵעֵהוּ יִקְרָא “satyr shall cry to satyr.”
(2) thought, will, i.q. Ch. רְעוּת, רַעְיוֹן Psalms 139:2, 17 Psalms 139:17. Root רְעָה Ch. to will, and ܪܥܐܳ Ethpa. to think.
