Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

פָּתָה

(1) pr. to spread out, to open. (Kindred are פָּתַת, פָּתַע, also the roots beginning with the letters פּש, see פָּשָׁה. In the Indo-Germ. languages; compare Sanscr. pad, to spread out, Gr. πετάω, πετάννυμι Lat. pateo.) Proverbs 20:19, פֹּתֶה שְׂפָתָיו “one who opens his lips,” used of a garrulous man, whose lips are opening continually.

(2) intrans. to be open, figuratively to be open and ingenuous in mind, like children and young people (Arab. فتا to be ingenuous, youthful); hence to let oneself be persuaded. Deuteronomy 11:16, פֶּזיִפְתֶּה לְבַבְכֶם “let not your heart be deceived.” Job 31:27. Part. פֹתֶה simple, foolish, Job 5:2 fem. פֹּתָה Hosea 7:11.

Niphal, to let oneself be persuaded, Jeremiah 20:7 to let oneself be enticed, followed by עֵל to any thing, Job 31:9.

Piel פִּתָּה.

(1) to persuade any one (πείθω), Jeremiah 20:7 especially in a bad sense, 1 Kings 22:20, seq.; Judges 14:15, 16:5 2 Samuel 3:25 hence to entice, to seduce, Exodus 22:15; Proverbs 1:10, 16:29.

(2) to deceive any one, to delude with words (Gr. ἀπατάω, to which Greek etymologists commonly assign an incorrect derivation), Psalms 78:36; Proverbs 24:28, הֲפִתִּיתָ בִּשְׂפָתֶיךָ “wilt thou deceive with thy lips?” i.e. deceive not, see הֲ No. 1, a.

Pual, i.q. Niphal, to let oneself be persuaded, Proverbs 25:15 to let oneself be deceived, Ezekiel 14:9; Jeremiah 20:10.

Hiphil, to cause to lie open, Genesis 9:27, יַפְתְּ אֱלֹהִים לְיֶפֶת “may God concede an ample space to Japheth:” a paronomasia is observable in these words.
