 I. [עָלַם] verb conceal (Late Hebrew id., derived species); —

Qal Participle pass עֲלֻמֵנוּ Psalm 90:8 as substantive our secret, i.e. hidden sin ("" עֲוֺנֹת).

Niph`al Perfect be concealed, of Wisdom of Solomon , 3 feminine singular נֶעֶלְמָה מֵעֵינֵי Job 28:21; of a fact or condition, נֶעְלַם 2 Chronicles 9:2, ׳וְנ consecutive Leviticus 5:2,3,4 (all with מִן person), מֵעֵינֵי׳וְנ Leviticus 4:13; Numbers 5:13 (all P); Participle

1 נֶעְלָם concealed, with הָיָה in periphrastic conjugation 1 Kings 10:3 (מִן person); absolute כָּלנֶֿעְלָם Ecclesiastes 12:14.

2 feminine singular תְּהִי נַעֲלָמָה Nahum 3:11 mayest thou become obscured (as to the senses; figurative for swoon), but very doubtful, read perhaps נעלפה ? [Dr].

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עָלַם to hide, to conceal. In Kal only occurring in part. pass. עֲלֻמִים hidden (sins), Psalms 90:8.

Niphal נֶעְלַםִ to be hidden, to lie hid, Nahum 3:11 followed by מִן of person from whom any thing is hid, Leviticus 5:2 and מֵעֵינֵי 4:13 Numbers 5:13. Part. נַעֲלָמִים secret men, crafty, Psalms 26:4.

Hiphil הֶעֱלִים

(1) to hide, followed by מִן from any one, 2 Kings 4:27. Specially

(a) הֶעֱלִים עֵינַיִם followed by מִן to hide the eyes, i.e. to turn them away from any one, implying neglect, Ezekiel 22:26 and refusing aid, Isaiah 1:15 compare Proverbs 28:27 sometimes connivance, Leviticus 20:4; 1 Samuel 12:3 (followed by בְּ). Without עֵינַיִם Psalms 10:1.

(b) הֶעֱלִים אֹזֶן to hide the ear, not to choose to hear, Lamentations 3:56.

(2) to hide, to cover over with words, i.e. to chide, to rebuke (opp. to throw light on, i.e. to praise), Job 42:3.

Hithpael, to hide one’s self. Job 6:16 used of rivers, עָלֵימוֹ יִתְעַלֵּם־שֶׁלֶנ “in which the snow hideth itself,” i.e. the snow water in the spring (עַל here having the signification of approach, see No. 1, b, α). Followed by מִן to turn oneself away from any thing, to withdraw from it; Deuteronomy 22:1, Deuteronomy 22:3, Deuteronomy 22:4. Psalms 55:2, אַל־תִּתְעַלֵּם מִתְּחִנָּתִי “hide not thyself from my supplication;” Isaiah 58:7.
