Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

נָקַב fut. יִקֹּב and יִנְקֹב prop. to hollow out, to excavate (like the cogn. יָקַב, קָבַב, also כָּוַו or כָּוָה, כָּפַף, which see for more instances). Hence

(1) to bore (a hole), 2 Kings 12:10, followed by an acc. to perforate (Arab., Eth., Syr., Chald., id.), Job 40:24, 26 Job 40:26 2 Kings 18:21; Haggai 1:6, צְרוֹר נָקוּב “a bag with holes in it.” Also to thrust through (with a spear), Habakkuk 3:14, נָקַבְתָּ רֹאשׁ פְּרָזָו “thou didst thrust through the heads of their leaders.” See the derived nouns.

(2) to separate, to distinguish; and hence to declare distinctly, to specify, to call by name (compare פָּרַשׁ No. 1, 2), Genesis 30:28 נָקְבָה שְׂכָֽרְךָ עָלַי “specify to me thy wages;” Isaiah 62:2. Part. pass. נְקֻבִים the named, i.e. the chiefs, nobles of the people, as if it were אַנְשֵׁי שֵׁמוֹת Amos 6:1, opp. to the common people, בְּלִי שֵׁם Job 30:8 (compare 1 Chronicles 12:31). Arab. نقيب a leader, commander, prince.

(3) to curse (prop. to pierce, like سبّ to cut, to bore; metaph. to curse), e.g. the name of God, Leviticus 24:11, 16 Leviticus 24:16, נֹקֵב שֵׁם יְיָ מוֹת יוּמָת “he that curseth the name of Jehovah shall surely die” (from this place has arisen the superstitious idea of the Jews that it is forbidden to pronounce (No. 2) the name of Jehovah, see יְהֹוָה ); Numbers 23:8, 25 Numbers 23:25; Job 3:8, 5:3 Proverbs 11:26.

Niphal, pass. of No. 2, to be called by name (compare Arab. لَقَّب to name, n and l being interchanged), Numbers 1:17, “these men אֲשֶׁר נִקְּבוּ בֵּשֵׁמוֹת who were called by their names;” 1 Chronicles 12:31, 16:41 2 Chronicles 28:15, 31:19.

From the primary signification of hollowing out is נֶקֶב socket for a gem, מַקֶּבֶת a stone quarry; from the idea of boring through are נְקֵבָה, קֹבָה, from that of striking through is מַקָּבָה a hammer.
