מִשְׁפָּחָה constr. מִשְׁפַּחַת, with suff. מִשְׁפַּחְתִּי, pl. מִשְׁפָּחוֹת Psalms 107:41, constr. and with suff. מִשְׁפְּחוֹת f. (from the root שָׁפַח, which see).
(1) genus, kind (of animals), Genesis 8:19 also used of inanimate things, Jeremiah 15:3.
(2) gens, tribe, Genesis 10:18, 20 Genesis 10:20, 31 Genesis 10:31, 32 Genesis 10:32, 12:3 also used of a whole people, Ezekiel 20:32; Jeremiah 8:3, 25:9 Micah 2:3. In the subdivisions of the people of Israel
(3) in a narrower sense, it denotes specially a family, of which several were comprehended in one tribe (שֵׁבֶט), so on the other hand one family included several fathers’ houses (בֵּית אָבוֹת see p. 116, B ), Exodus 6:14, seq.; Numbers 1:2, 20, seq.; 26:5, seq.; Deuteronomy 29:17; Joshua 7:14, seq.; 21:5, seq.; 1 Samuel 20:29, זֶבַח מִשְׁפָּחָה לָנוּ “we have a family sacrifice.” It is sometimes less exactly put for שֵׁבֶט as Joshua 7:17, מִשְׁפַּחַת יְהוּדָה for the preceding שֵׁבֶט יְהוּדָה.
