טַף m. with suffix טַפִּי collect, little children, boys and girls, so called from their brisk and tripping gait (from the root טָפַף, compare עוֹלֵל), Genesis 34:29, 43:8 45:19 46:5 opposed to young men and virgins, Ezekiel 9:6 to men above twenty years of age, Exodus 12:37. Sometimes it extends to the whole family, and is opposed only to the head of the house. 2 Chronicles 20:13, גַּם־טַפָּם נְשֵׁיהֶם וּבְנֵיהֶם “also their families, (to wit) their wives and children.” 2 Chronicles 31:18. Genesis 47:12, לְפִי הַטַּף “according to their family.” Exodus 10:10; Numbers 32:16, 24 Numbers 32:24, 26 Numbers 32:26.
