Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חָלָה properly, to be rubbed (compare (חָלָא), hence

(1)  to be polished, smooth, whence חֲלִי, חֶלְיָה ornaments of a woman, so called from polishing; so the Arab. حاى to adorn with a woman’s ornaments, Syr. ܚܠܺܝ to be sweet, pleasant (properly smooth), Pael to adorn, ܚܰܠܝܐܳ sweet.

(2) to be worn down in strength, to be infirm, Judges 16:7, seq.; Isaiah 57:10.

(3) to be sick, diseased, Genesis 48:1. חָלָה חֳלִי, like the Greek νοσεῖν νόσον, 2 Kings 13:14. חָלָה אֶת רַגְלָיו to be diseased in the feet, 1 Kings 15:23. Of disease from a wound or hurt, 2 Kings 1:2, 8:29, רָעָה חוֹלָה a diseased evil, i.e. one which can scarcely be healed. Ecclesiastes 5:12, 15, חוֹלַת אַהֲבָה sick with love, Song of Solomon 2:5, 5:8.

(4) to be pained, Proverbs 23:35 hence, metaph. to be careful, or solicitous, followed by עַל, 1 Samuel 22:8. (Corresponding is Ethiopic ሐለየ፡ to be careful or solicitous, for the Gr. μεριμνᾷν, Matthew 6:28 see Lud.De Dieu, h. l.).

Niphal, נֶחֱלָה

(1) to be worn down in strength, to become wearied, Jeremiah 12:13.

(2) to be or become sick, Daniel 8:27. Part. f. נַחְלָה e.g. מַכָּה נַחְלָה a sickly wound, one which can hardly be healed, Jeremiah 14:17, 30:12, comp. 10:19 Nahum 3:19.

(3) to be careful, or solicitous, followed by עַל, Amos 6:6.

Piel, חִלָּה

(1) to stroke, to smooth any one’s face, from the primary idea of the roots חָלָא and חָלָה, i.e. that of rubbing, rubbing away, comp. Gr. κηλέω, to soothe, to caress. It is always fully expressed, חִלָּה פְּנֵי פ׳ to stroke some one’s face

(a) of soothing, flattering, a king or a noble. Job 11:19; Proverbs 19:6; Psalms 45:13, “the richest of the nations shall make suit to thee with gifts.”

(b) of asking or intreating, imploring any one’s favor, Exodus 32:11; 1 Samuel 13:12; 1 Kings 13:6; 2 Kings 13:4; Daniel 9:13 compare Iliad. viii. 371; x. 454, seq.

(2) to make sick, to afflict with sickness. Deuteronomy 29:21 Psal. 77:11, חַלּוֹתִי הִיא “this has made me sick.”

Pual, pass. to be made weak (used of a departed spirit in Hades), Isaiah 14:10.

Hiphil, pret. הֶחֱלִי (Syriac form for הֶחֱלָה), Isaiah 53:10.

(1) to make sick or grievous (of a wound), Isa. loc. cit., Micah 6:13, to make oneself sick. Hosea 7:5, “in the day of our king הֶחֱלוּ שָׁרִים חֲמַת מִיַּיִן the princes made (themselves) sick with the heat of wine.”

(2) to make sad, Proverbs 13:12.

Hophal, to be wounded, 1 Kings 22:34.

Hithpael.

(1) to become sick (with grief), 2 Samuel 13:2.

(2) to feign oneself sick, ibid. verse 5, 6.
