Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

גֶּפֶן with suff. גַּפְנִי; pl. גְּפָנִים comm. (m. rarely Hosea 10:1; 2 Kings 4:39), a twig, and a plant which has twigs, especially a vine, which however [“comp. salix = ἕλιξ prop. a rod, switch”], when more exactness was needed, as in the laws, is called גֶּפֶן הַיַּיִן Numbers 6:4; Judges 13:14 rarely used of other similar plants, as גֶּפֶן שָׂדֶה 2 Kings 4:39, a wild vine, on which wild cucumbers grew. Hence most commonly it simply denotes a vine, Genesis 40:9; Isaiah 7:23, 24:7 32:12 Judges 9:13, seq. A noble vine figuratively denotes men of more noble qualities, Jeremiah 2:21 (compare Isaiah 5:2); and on the other hand, a wild vine, vine of Sodom (Jer. loc. cit.; Deuteronomy 32:32), denotes men of ignoble and degenerate qualities; as to the latter, see on the apples of Sodom, Jos. Bell. Jud. iv. 8, § 4.
