Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

גָּזַר fut. יִגְזֹר (see No. 3), and יִגְזַר (No. 4).

(1) to cut, to divide, 1 Kings 3:25, 26 1 Kings 3:26; Psalms 136:13. (Arab. جَزَرَ to cut off; Syr. ܓܙܪܰ to cut away, around. Comp. the remark on גָּזַז, גָּדַד. Especially related are קָצַר, כָּזַר, كسر; and with the letters transposed, גָּרַז, קָרַץ, כָּרַת.)

(2) to cut down wood, 2 Kings 6:4. See מַגְזֵרָה, and גַּרְזֶן an axe, from the kindred גָּרַז.

(3) to eat up, to devour, from the idea of cutting food, see בָּרָא No. 4, and בָּרָה No. 2. So fut. O. Isaiah 9:19, used there of the slaughter of war. Arab. جرز to eat quickly, to slaughter, to kill.

(4) to decree, to decide, to constitute, fut. A. Job 22:28 as גְּזַר, ܓܙܰܪ in Chaldee and Syriac, compare גְּזֵרָה.

(5) intrans. to cut off, to fail. Habakkuk 3:17, גָּזַר מִמִּכְלָה צאֹן “the sheep fail in the folds.” LXX. ἐξέλιπεν πρόβατα. (Arabic جزر specially used of water decreasing.)

Niphal

(1) pass. of Kal No. 4, to be decreed, Esther 2:1.

(2) to be separated, excluded [cut off]. 2 Chronicles 26:21, כִּי נִנְזַר מִבֵּית יְהֹוָה “for he was excluded from the house of God.” Isaiah 53:8, כִּי נִגְזַר מֵאֶרֶץ חַיִּים “he was excluded [cut off] from the land of the living.” Psalms 88:6.
