Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שָׁם adv., there (Arab. ثَمَّ and of time ثُمَّ; Chald. תָּם; Syriac ܬܳܡܰܢ. A trace of another form שֹׁם = ثُمَّ is found in the pr.n. גֵּרְשֹׁם Exodus 2:22, as to which see p. 182, A. In the Indo-Germanic languages there answer to this, Gr. τῆμος, tunc; Lat. tum (tunc; compare num, nunc); Anglosax. thoeœnne; whence the English then; Germ. dann; all of which are applied to time; see No. 2). It is used

(1) pr. of place,

(a) i.q. eo loco, ἐκεῖ. Genesis 2:8, 12 11:2, 31 Genesis 11:31, 12:7, Genesis 12:8, 10 Genesis 12:10, 13:4, 18 Genesis 13:18 and so very often. When preceded by a relative, אֲשֶׁר שָׁם where, Exodus 20:18 commonly with one or more words between, שָׁם-אֲשֶׁר Genesis 13:3; 2 Samuel 15:21. שָׁם-שָׁם here, there, Isaiah 28:10.

(b) after verbs of motion, i.q. שָׁמָּה thither (like ἐκεῖ for ἐκεῖσε), 1 Samuel 2:14; 2 Kings 19:32 whence שָׁם-אֲשֶׁר whither, 1 Kings 18:10; Jeremiah 19:14.

(2) used of time, at that time, then (like the Gr. ἐκεῖ, Lat. ibi, illico, compare the above remarks on the traces of this word in other languages), Psalms 14:5, 132:17 Judges 5:11.

(3) i.q. therein, in that thing, Hosea 6:7, “they have transgressed the covenant, שָׁם בָּֽגְדוּ בִי therein (darin, in diefem Stücke) they have rebelled against me.”

With ה parag. שָׁ֫מָּה (read shammah)

(a) thither, Genesis 19:20, 23:13 Isaiah 34:15 (where we must render, “thither shall she place her nest,” etc., comp. Psalms 122:5; Exodus 29:42).

(b) i.q. שָׁם there (so that -ָה has a mere demonstrative power), Jeremiah 18:2. After a relative, אֲשֶׁר שָׁ֫מָּה whither, Genesis 20:13 rarely where, 2 Kings 23:8.

With pref. מִשָּׁם thence

(1) of place, Genesis 2:10, 11:8, Genesis 11:9; 1 Samuel 4:4. מִשָּׁם-אֲשֶׁר whence, Deuteronomy 9:28.

(2) used of time, Hosea 2:17.

(3) i.q. from that thing, whence, like the Lat. inde (unde), Genesis 3:23, “that he might till the ground אֲשֶׁר לֻקַּה מִשָּׁם whence (out of which) he had been taken;” 1 Kings 17:13, עֲשִׂי לִי מִשָּׁם עֻגָּה “make me thence (out of that meal) a cake;” Ezra 5:3. Pleonastically, Genesis 49:24. מִשָּׁם רֹעֶה אֶבֶן יִשְׂרָאֵל “from thence (dorther), from the shepherd, the stone of Israel (comes),” etc.
