מַר m. (from the root מָרַר).
(1) subst. a drop, so called from flowing down (see מָרַר No. 1 ), Isaiah 40:15.
(2) adj. f. מָרָה bitter, Isaiah 5:20; Proverbs 27:7 bitter, acrid (fcharf), of brackish water, Exodus 15:23. Neutr. as a substantive, bitterness (of death), 1 Samuel 15:32. Metaph.
(a) sad, sorrowful, Ezekiel 3:14 often used of the mind, Job 21:25. מַר נֶפֶשׁ adj. sad of soul, 1 Samuel 1:10, 22:2 and subst. sadness, Job 7:11, 10:1.
