He is חַסְדָּם their goodness favour Jonah 2:9; חַסְדִּי Psalm 144:2; אֱלֹהֵי חַסְדִּי God of my kindness Psalm 59:18; in Psalm 59:11 read אֱלֹהַי חַסְדּוֺ my God with his kindness ᵐ5ᵑ9 Ew Hup De Pe Che Bae; his is the kindness Psalm 62:13; it is with him Psalm 130:7; he delights in it Micah 7:18.

b. great in extent: ׳נֹּדֶל חִ greatness of thy mercy Numbers 14:19 (J); ׳נְּדָו֯וֺלחֿ Psalm 145:8; it is kept for thousands Exodus 34:7 (JE), Jeremiah 32:18, especially of those connected with lovers of ׳י, Exodus 20:6 = Deuteronomy 5:10; for 1000 Generations Deuteronomy 7:9; it is great as the heavens Psalm 57:11; Psalm 103:11, compare Psalm 36:6; Psalm 108:5; the earth is full of it Psalm 33:5; Psalm 119:64.

4 plural mercies, deeds of kindness, the historic displays of lovingkindness to Israel: shewn to Jacob Genesis 32:11 (R); but mostly late Isaiah 63:7; Psalm 25:6; Psalm 89:2; כְּרֹב חסִדיו Isaiah 63:7, see

II. חֶ֫סֶד noun masculine shame, reproach, only absolute: — הוּא׳ח Leviticus 20:17 (H) it is a shame (shameful thing); לְאֻמִּים חַטָּאת׳ח Proverbs 14:34 sin is a reproach to peoples.
חֶסֶד [“in pause חָֽסֶד”], with suff. חַסְדִּי pl. חֲסָדִיס, const. חַסְדֵי prop. desire, ardour (see the root), whence
(1) in a good sense, zeal towards any one, love, kindness, specially
(a) of men amongst themselves, benignity, benevolence, as shown in mutual benefits; mercy, pity, when referring to those in misfortune, Genesis 21:23; 2 Samuel 10:2 (LXX. often ἔλεος); Job 6:14. The expression often occurs, עָשָׂה חֶסֶד עִם to act kindly towards, Gen. loc. cit.; 2 Samuel 3:8, 9:1, 2 Samuel 9:7 also followed by אֵת Zechariah 7:9 עַל 1 Samuel 20:8 more fully, חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת עִם, עָשָׂה Genesis 24:49, 47:29 Joshua 2:14; 2 Samuel 9:3, אֶעֱשֶׂה עִמּוֹחֶסֶד אֱלֹהִים “I will act kindly towards him like unto God.” נָטָה חֶסֶד לְ to turn, or incline, kindness upon any one, Genesis 39:21 more fully, Ezra 7:28, עָלַי הִטֶּה חֶסֶד לִפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ “(God) turned kindness upon me before the king,” and Daniel 1:9, וַיִּתֵּן הָאֱלֹהִים אֶת־דָנִיֵּאל לְחֶסֶד “and God caused that Daniel should obtain favour.”
(b) piety of men towards God. אַנְשֵׁי חֶסֶד=חֲסִידִים the pious saints, Isaiah 57:1.
(c) the grace, favour, mercy of God towards men. Psalms 5:8, 36:6 48:10, etc. It is often joined with אֱמֶת (see אֱמֶת No. 2 ) constant or abiding favour. The same expressions likewise occur as under letter a, as עָשָׂה חֶסֶד עִם Genesis 24:12, 14 Genesis 24:14 followed by לְ Exodus 20:6; Deuteronomy 5:10 עָשָׂה חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת עִם 2 Samuel 2:6, 15:20. Pl. חֲסָדִים mercies or benefits (of God), Psalms 89:2, 50 Psalms 89:50, 107:43 Isaiah 55:3, חַסְדֵי דָוִד הַנֶּאֱמָנִים “the sure mercies of David,” abiding mercies such as were bestowed on David [or rather, which were securely promised to David]. Figuratively, God himself is called חֶסֶד q. d. die Huld, Liebe. Psalms 144:2; Jonah 2:9.-Once, like its synonym חֵן, it seems to signify grace in the sense of beauty, Isaiah 40:6. LXX. δόξα, and so 1 Peter 1:24.
(2) in a bad sense, zeal, ardour against any one, envy, hence reproach (see root No. 2). Proverbs 14:34; Leviticus 20:17. Some would also place here Job 6:14.
(3) [Hesed], pr.n. m. 1 Kings 4:10.
