αὐλίζομαι, aor. 1 ηὐλισάμην always in Th., as 4.13, 6.7, cf. (κατ-) Plu. Tim. 12; ηὐλίσθην always in X., as An. 4.1.11, al.; both in Hdt., as 8.9 (ἐν-), 9.15: late fut. αὐλισθήσομαι LXX To. 6.10: pf. ηὔλισμαι Arr. An. 3.29.7, J. BJ 1.17.5: —
I lie in the αὐλή or courtyard, μυκηθμοῦ.. βοῶν αὐλιζομενάων Od. 12.265; κλαγγὴ.. συῶν αὐλιζομενάων 14.412; take up one's abode, lodge, live in a place, ἐν ἄντρῳ, of sheep, Hdt. 9.93; περὶ τὴν λίμνην, of birds, 3.110, cf. Arist. HA 619a30; οἵοις ἐν πέπλοις αὐ. E. αὐλίζομαι: deponent; imperfect ηὐλιζόμην; 1 aorist ηὐλίσθην (Veitch, under the word; Buttmann, 51 (44); Winer's Grammar, § 39, 2); (αὐλή); in the Sept. mostly for לוּן;
1. properly, to lodge in the courtyard especially at night; of flocks and shepherds.
2. to pass the night in the open air, bivouac.
3. universally, to pass the night, lodge: so Matthew 21:17; Luke 21:37 (ἐξερχόμενος ηὐλίζετο εἰς τό ὄρος, going out to pass the night he retired to the mountain; cf. Buttmann, § 147, 15). (In Greek writings from Homer down.)

OGIS 730.7 (iii/B.C.) ὥστε αὐλίσ [ασθα ]ι [αὐτόθι ἐν ἡ ]μ [έ ]ραις δυσί (ν ). We may note Didache 11.6, where it is laid down that a wayfaring apostle, on leaving any house where he has been entertained, is to take nothing with him except bread ἕως οὗ αὐλισθῇ , ";until he reach his (next night’s) lodging"; : cf. the expressive use in LXX Psa. 29꞉6 [MT Psalms 30:5] τὸ ἑσπέρας αὐλισθήσεται κλαυθμός , ";weeping may come in to lodge (like a passing stranger) at even,"; In Preisigke 1579, a bracelet of Byzantine date, we find LXX Psalms 90:1 [MT Psalms 91:1] as an amulet, with αὐλισθίσεται : there are no variants except of spelling.
