Eu. 473: Pass., pf. ἤρτῡμαι Pherecr., Eup., Hp., v. infr.: aor. ἠρτύθην [ ] Ruf. ap. Orib. 4.2.4: in Att. this Verb is chiefly used in compds. with κατά and ἐξ: (cf. ἀραρίσκω):

I like ἀρτύνω, arrange, prepare, make ready, of things requiring skill or cunning, e.g. of a smith, τὰ δ' ἤρτυε Il. 18.379; σοὶ δὲ.. δόλον ἤρτυε Od. 11.439; τῷδ' ἤρτυεν.. ὄλεθρον 16.448, cf. 20.242; γάμον.. ἀρτύει 4.771; ἤρτυσαν τὴν ἐπιβουλήν Hdt. 1.12; φόνον τινί Plb. 15.25.2.

II in culinary sense, dress savoury meat, season, S. Fr. 1122, Cratin. 303; ἀ. τὰ ὄψα Arist. EN 1118a29: Pass., κίχλαι.. εἰς ἀνάβραστ' ἠρτυμέναι Pherecr. 108.23; ὄψῳ πονηρῷ πολυτελῶς ἠρτυμένῳ Eup. 335; τὰ πρὸς ἡδονὴν ἠρτυμένα Hp. VM 14; ἠρτυμένος οἶνος Thphr. Od. 51.

III administer property, Leg.Gort. 12.32, IG 5(2).3.27 (Tegea, iv B. C.), Epich. 192. bequeath, Tab.Heracl. 1.106.

ἀρτύω: future ἀρτύσω; passive, perfect ἠρτυμαι; 1 future ἀρτυθήσομαι; (ἈΡΩ to fit); to prepare, arrange; often so in Homer In the comic writers and epigrammatists used of preparing food, to season, make savory ((τά ὄψα, Aristotle, eth. Nic. 3, 13, p. 1118a, 29); ἠρτυμένος οἶνος, Theophrastus, de odor. § 51 (fragment 4, c. 11)); so Mark 9:50; Luke 14:34; metaphorically, λόγος ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος, full of wisdom and grace and hence, pleasant and wholesome, Colossians 4:6.

For ἀρτύω = ";season,"; and not ";restore"; in Mark 9:50, Luke 14:32, as in Colossians 4:6, Wackernagel (ThLZ 1908, col 36 n.1) cites Athen. III. 113. 13 ἄρτος ἁπαλός, ἀρτυόμενος γάλακτι ὀλίγῳ καὶ ἐλαίῳ καὶ ἀλσὶν ἀρκετοῖς. Dioscor. II. 76 ἀρτυτοῖς (ἀρτυτικοῖς ?) ἁλσί, salibus condimento inservientibus. P Tebt II. 375.27 (A.D. 140) ζύμης ἠρτυμένης. Ἀρτύματα ";spices"; are mentioned in an account P Amh II. 126.40 (early ii/A.D.) : cf. P Giss I. 47.14 (ii/A.D.) τὰ δύο μάτια (= .1/6 artaba) τῶν ἀρτυμάτων (δραχμῶν) π ̄. A subst. ἀρτυματατᾶς occurs BGU IV. 1087ii. 9 (iii/A.D.) : cf. ib. I. 9iv. 5; cf. also ἀρ ̣τ ̣υματοπώλης on a tombstone, Preisigke 699 (i/A.D.), and ἀρτυτήρ in Michel 1001 iv. 37 v. 4 (Epicteta’s Will, Thera, c. B.C. 200). In a lexicon to Iliad xviii., P Ryl I. 25.10 (ii/A.D.) ἤρτυε is glossed [κατεσκεύα ]ζε : for supplement see Hunt’s note.
