I

1.go from or away from, δόμων Ar. Ach. 456; ἐκ τοῦ στρατοπέδου Pl. R. 394a.

2. abs., depart, πάλιν ἀ. E. IT 265; withdraw, ἐπὶ τὰ ἀναγκαῖα v.l. in X. Cyr. 1.6.36; esp. after a defeat, retire, retreat, Th. 2.89, etc.; πρὸς τὴν πόλιν X. HG 4.4.11; ἐπὶ τῆς Κορίνθου Th. 2.94.

3. ἀ.ἐκ τῶν πόλεων.. withdraw from.., give up possession of, X. HG 5.2.13. metaph., withdraw or dissent from opinions, δοξῶν Gal. 15.356, cf. Arr. Epict. 4.1.53.

In the interesting census return P Lond 260.120 (A.D. 72–3) (= II. p. 51) reference is made to the son of a man who had acquired the Alexandrian citizenship and ἀποκεχ w eivj thivdi,an, ";had returned to his own country,"; who consequently was to be reckoned as Alexandrian. Cf. P Lond 44.18 (B.C. 161) (= I. p. 34) ἀπεχώρουν, and the illiterate P Fay 116.20 (A.D. 104) αἰὰν [ἀπο ]χωρῶι πέμσωι πρὸς [σὲ εἵ ]να σε ἀσπάσωμαι, ";if I leave I will send to you to greet you.";
