Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The verb is very common—P Petr I. 16 (2).13 (iii/B.C.) ἐὰν δὲ μὴ διαγράψω [καὶ ] μὴ παράσχωμαι τὸ λοιπὸν ἐμφανὲς ἀποτείσω ἡμιόλιον, P Par 13.14 (B.C. 157) ἀποτίνειν αὐτὸν τὴν φερνὴν παραχρῆμα σὺν τῇ ἡμιολίᾳ, P Oxy I. 101.43 (lease of land, A.D. 142) ὃ δ᾽αν προσοφειλέσῃ ὁ μεμισθωμένος ἀποτεισάτω μεθ᾽ ἡμιολίας, ib. IV. 730.26 (A.D. 130) al. In an interesting contract of apprenticeship, P Oxy II. 275.27 (A.D. 66) (= Selections, p. 57) the father comes under a ";forfeit"; for each day of his son’s absence from work— ̣[πο ]τεισάτω ἑκάσ [τ ]ης ἡμέρας ἀργυρίου [δρ ́]αχμὴν μίαν. The verb is thus stronger than ἀποδίδωμι, and carries with it the idea of repayment by way of punishment or fine (cf. Gradenwitz Einf. i. p. 85 n.4), a fact which lends emphasis to its use in Philemon 1:19. For the contrast between the two verbs, see P Gen I. 21.14 (ii/B.C.), as restored by Wilcken Archiv iii. p. 388, ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἀποδῶι καθὰ γέγραπται, ἀποτε [ι ]σάτω [παραχ ]ρῆμα ἡμι [ ]λιον, cf. BGU I. 190.3 ff., 2nd fragment (Domitian), ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἰσαποδῶι, ἀποτισάτωι παραχρῆμα μεθ᾽ ἡμιολία [ς ], and a similar use of προσαποτίσω in P Leid C.11.

From the inscriptions cf. Kaibel 509.2 where a certain physician of Nicaea records—πολ [λ ]ὴν θάλασσα [ν ] καὶ γαῖαν [π ]ερι [νο ]στήσας τὸ π [επρω ]μένον ὧδ᾽ [ἀπέ ]τεισα, i.e. ";I died here,"; Syll 737.97 (ii/A.D.) of an ἰόβακχος ";fined,"; etc. The word occurs in P Saïd Khan 1a. 26 (B.C. 88) ἐὰν [δὲ κ ]αὶ ὁ Γαθάκης ὀλιγωρήσῃ τὴν [ἄμπε ]λον καὶ μὴ ποιήσῃ αὐτη ̣̣[ν ] ε ̣͗παφον (?), ἀποτειννυέτω τὸ α [ὐτὸ ἐπί ]τειμον : Radermacher Gr. p. 81 n.2 mentions ζέννυμι for ζέω, and ἀποτίνυμι in Passio Scillitanorum 6.
