ἀγράμμ-ᾰτος, ον,
I illiterate, X. Mem. 4.2.20, Damox. 2.12, Epicur. Fr. 236, AP 11.154 (Lucill.), cf. S.E. M. 1.99; unable to read or write, Pl. Ti. 23a. Adv. -τως Ph. 1.195, Arr. Epict. 2.9.10.
II = ἄγραπτος, ἔθη Pl. Plt. 295a.
III of animals,
1. unable to utter articulate sounds, Arist. HA 488a33.
2. of sounds, inarticulate, Id. Int. 16a29, D.L. 3.107; incapable of being written, Porph. Abst. 3.3, cf. Eustr. in APo. 102.19; ᾠδὴ ἀ. song without words, Phld. Po. 2 Fr. 47.22.
ἀγράμματος, (γράμμα), illiterate, without learning: Acts 4:13 (i. e. unversed in the learning of the Jewish schools; cf. John 7:15 γράμματα μή μεμαθηκώς).

Ἀ. is of constant occurrence in the formula used by one person signing a deed or letter on behalf of another who cannot write—ἔγραψα ὑπέρ τινος ἀγραμμάτου, e.g. BGU I. 118 ii. 17, ib. 152.6 (both ii/A.D.) : cf. P Oxy II. 275.43 (A.D. 66) ( = Selections p. 58) Ζωίλος. . . ἔγραψα ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ μὴ ἰδότος γράμματα. The great frequency of ἀγράμματος, invariably in this sense, suggests that the sneer in Acts 4:13 is intended to picture the Apostles as ";illiterate,"; and not merely ";unversed in the learning of the Jewish schools"; (Grimm).
