(A), (εἰμί sum), impf. ἀπῆν (later ἀπήμην POxy. 1204.23 (iii A.D.)), 2 sg. ἀπῆσθα S. Ph. 379; ἀπέην Il. 20.7, 3 pl. ἄπεσαν ib. 10.357: fut. ἀπέσομαι Ar. Nu. 887; ἀπέσσομαι Od. 8.150, 3 sg. ἀπεσσεῖται ib. 19.302: —
1. to be away or far from, c. gen., ὁππότε πάτρης ἧς ἀπέῃσιν ἀνήρ ib. 169, cf. 20.155,al.; ἐὰν δ' ἀπῇ τούτων τὸ χαίρειν S. Ant. 1169; ἀ. ἀπὸ τῶν ἰδίων Th. 1.141: c. dat., φίλοισιν E. Med. 179 (lyr.), cf. Tr. 393, Hdt. 4.1, Th. 2.61, etc.: but mostly,
2. abs., to be away or absent, and of things, to be wanting, οἵ τ' ὄντες οἵ τ' ἀπόντες, i.e. all that are, every one, S. Ant. 1109; τὰς οὔσας τέ μου καὶ τὰς ἀπούσας ἐλπίδας Id. El. 306; of the dead, v.l. in E. Hec. 312; τοῦ θεοῦ ἀπεόντος the god not being counted, Hdt. 6.53: — in 3 pl. impf., ἀπῆσαν and ἀπῇσαν are freq. confused in codd., as in Th. 4.42.
