ἀπειθ-έω,
Att. form of ἀπῐθέω (though even Trag. preferred ἀπιστέω, q.v. 11),
1. to be disobedient, refuse compliance, A. Ag. 1049; opp. πείθομαι, Pl. Phdr. 271b: freq. c. dat., disobey, οὐκ ἀπειθήσας θεῷ E. Or. 31; ἀ. ἅμα νόμῳ καὶ τῷ θεῷ Pl. Lg. 741d, etc.; τὰ μεγάλα ἀ. τινί in great matters, Id. R. 538b; ἀ. ταῖς ἐνεχυρασίαις not to abide by them, Id. Lg. 949d: later c. gen., ψαφίσματος GDI 3705.111 (Cos); ἐντολῶν LXX John 5:6.

a. to refuse or withhold belief (in Christ, in the gospel; opposed to πιστεύω): τῷ υἱῷ, John 3:36; τῷ λόγῳ, 1 Peter 2:8; 1 Peter 3:1; absolutely of those who reject the gospel, (R. V. to be disobedient; cf. b.): Acts 14:2; Acts 17:5 (Rec.);
b. to refuse belief and obedience: with the dative of thing or of person, Romans 2:8 (τῇ ἀλήθεια);

For ἀ. = ";disobey"; in its later as in its earlier history see s. v. ἀπείθεια and cf. P Hib I. 73.19 (B.C. 243–2) τὴν Πάτρωνος βίαν, ὃς ἀπειθῶν δια [τετέλεκε τοῖς πα ]ρὰ σοῦ προστάγμασιν, ";the violence of Patron, who has continued to disobey your orders"; (Edd.), P Tebt I. 6.46 (B.C. 139—decree of Euergetes II) τοὺς δὲ ἀπειθοῦντας ἐπαναγκάζετε εὐτάκτω [ς ] ἕκαστ᾽ ἀποδιδόναι, ";compel those who disobey to pay all the sums regularly"; (Edd.), ib. 49.17 (B.C. 113) ἐὰν δὲ ἀπειθῆι, ";if he refuses"; (Edd.). So Rev L 43.10 (iii/B.C.) Add from the inscriptions Syll 614.110 (Cos, dialect, iii/B.C.) αἰ δέ κά τις. . . ἀπειθῇ, let him be fined, ib. 510.82 (Ephesus, ii/B.C.) ὡς ἀπειθοῦντα καὶ ἐπιβουλεύοντα τοῖς συ (μ)φέρουσι τῆς πόλεως, ib. 737.99 (ii/A.D., Athens) ἐὰν δὲ ἀπειθῇ πρασσόμενος, he is to be denied entrance to the Bacchium, and similarly .142, ib. 653.40 (Andania, B.C. 91) τὸν δὲ ἀπειθοῦντα ἢ ἀπρεπῶς ἀναστρεφόμενον εἰς τὸ θεῖον μαστιγούντω οἱ ἱεροί, and so .43. We have not sought for more instances, but it has seemed desirable to give rather plentiful illustration to prove a case which is very important for doctrine.
