VH 3.1 (written ἐφιλοτειμήσετο Ephes. 3 No.13): pf. πεφιλοτίμημαι D. 42.24, Porph. ap. Stob. 2.1.32: — pf. in pass. sense, Aristid. 1.446 J.: (φιλότιμος): — love or seek after honour, Pl. 2. the object of ambition, etc., is mostly added with a Pr, φ. ἐπί τινι to place one's fame in a thing, glory or pride oneself upon it, Pl. R. 553d, X. Mem. 2.6.12, Lys. 14.42; ἐπὶ τοῖς πεπραγμένοις Isoc. 3.46, al.; ἔν τινι Pl. La. 182b; ὑπὲρ τῆς δόξης Isoc. 8.93; περὶ τῶν καλῶν contend in rivalry for, Plu. 2.760c; περὶ τὴν θήραν, δεῖπνα, D.S. 3.18, Plu. Phil. 9; ἀφ' ἑτέρων ἀρετῶν Id. 2.819c: c. neut. pron. in acc., πρὸς ἃ ἐγὼ φιλοτιμοῦμαι X. HG 1.6.5: c. acc. cogn., φ. φιλοτιμίας ἀκάρπους Plu. 2.830e; τὴν ἀγαθὴν ἔριν J. a. to be fond of honor; to be actuated by love of honor; from a love of honor to strive to bring something to pass;
b. followed by an infinitive, to be ambitious to etc., 1 Thessalonians 4:11; Romans 15:20; to strive earnestly, make it one's aim, 2 Corinthians 5:9.

The word χάρτης occurs only once in the NT (2Jn. 12), but is naturally common in our sources, e.g. P Lille I. 3.45 (after B.C. 241–0), where payment is made ὅπως [ἔ ]χωμεν χορηγεῖν εἴς τε τὴ [ν ] γραμματεί [αν ] καὶ χάρτας, P Cairo Zen III. 59317.4 (B.C. 250) ἀνηλώσω δὲ εἰς ταῦτα χάρτας δ ̄, ";I shall require 4 papyrus rolls for these things"; (sc. the keeping of certain accounts), P Oxy II. 390 (i/A.D.) payment of 1 drachma 3 obols χάρτου, P Tebt II. 347.19 (ii/AD.) ἀποθήκη τιμὴν χαρτῶν (δραχμαὶ) δ ̄ : the editors compare ib. 542, ";where 9 dr. for τιμῆ (ς) χάρτου are deducted from the receipts on account of a tax,"; ib. 420.7 (iii/A.D.) ἠγόρασα β ̄ χάρτας, ";I bought two sheets of papyrus,"; P Flor III. 367.7 (iii/A.D.) πολλάκις μου. . . χάρτας ἐπιστολικο [ὺς ἀπο ]στείλαντος, ἵν᾽ εὐπορῇς (cf. Act. 11:29) τοῦ γρά [φειν ] μοι, P Oxy VI. 895.12 (A.D. 305) τιμῆς χάρτου καὶ γράπ [τρων. . ., ";for the price of papyrus and writing-materials,"; and so.14. For χάρτης ἱερατικός, ";sacred paper,"; cf. P Lond 46.304 (iv/A.D.) (= I. p. 74).
It may be of interest to add some related words—χάρτη, as in BGU III. 822 verso (iii/A.D.) πέμψον μοι ἄγραφον χ ̣άρτην, ἵνα εὕρο [με ]ν ἐπιστολ [ὴν ] γράψαι : χαρτίον, as in P Cairo Zen III. 59470.7 (mid. iii/B.C.) περὶ δὲ τῶν χαρτίων ἔγραψα μέν σοι, P Gen I. 52.3 χαρτίον (so read by Wilcken Archiv iii. p. 399) καθαρὸν μὴ εὑρὼν πρὸς τὴν ὥραν εἰς τοῦ [τ ]ον ̣ ἔγραψα, ";not having found a clean sheet of paper, for the moment I have written on this"; : χαρτάριον, as in P Tebt II. 413.5 (ii/iii A.D.) τὸ χαρτάριν (l. χαρτάριον) ἔλαβεν Σερηνίων ἐσ íσ ýφραγισμένον, ";Serenion took the papyrus sealed"; : χαρτοπώλης, as read in P Tebt I. 112.62 (B.C. 112) (as amended Berichtigungen, p. 425) : and ἐπιχάρτη, ";an extra sheet,"; as in P Oxy I. 34 verso 15 (A.D. 127).
