I utterance prompted by the gods, significant or prophetic saying, χαῖρε δὲ φήμῃ Ὀδυσσῆος φίλος υἱός Od. 2.35, ubi v. Sch.; in the prayer of Odysseus to Zeus, φήμην τίς μοι φάσθω Od. 20.100; folld. by φήμην δ' ἐξ οἴκοιο γυνὴ προέηκεν ἀλετρίς ib. 105; φ. and κλεηδών are interchanged, Hdt. 5.72, cf. S. 2. report, rumour, usu. of uncertain and mysterious origin, φήμη οὔ τις πάμπαν ἀπόλλυται, ἥν τινα πολλοὶ λαοὶ φημίξωσι· θεός νύ τίς ἐστι καὶ αὐτή Hes. Op. 763, cf. Aeschin. 1.128 (citing φήμη δ' ἐς στρατὸν ἦλθε as from Il.); Φήμης βωμός Sch. ad loc., Paus. 1.17.1; common report, opp. συκοφαντία, Aeschin. 2.145; φάμα δ' ἦλθε κατὰ πτόλιν Sapph. l. c.; ἄμβροτε Φ. ";a mixture,"; and hence ";a lump"; (Rom. 11:16, al.) : cf. the account of a beer-seller P Tebt II. 401.27 (early i/A.D.) in which reference is made to—φυράμ (ατος) (ἀρτάβαι) ε ̄ (δραχμαί), and P Lond 46.378 (iv/A.D.) (=1. p. 77) εἰς ὅλο (ν) τὸ φύραμα.

For the verb φυράω cf. the medical receipt P Oxy VIII. 1088.22 (early i/A.D.) μάνναν φύρασον χυλῶι πράσωι καὶ ἐνάλιψον τὸν χυλὸν ἐνδόθεν, ";mix frankincense with onion-juice and apply the juice inside"; (Ed.), to stop nose-bleeding, ib. XIV. 1692.21 (A.D. 188) φυράσι τὸν Πηλουσι ̣[ακὸν οἶνον ?]. The compd. ἀναφυράω, ";mix up well,"; occurs in Syll 807 (=.81173).9 (not earlier than A.D. 138) τέφραν μετ᾽ οἴνου ἀναφυρᾶσαι.
