Xenoph. 1.17: sts., like cross ὑβρίζω, folld. by a Pr, Ἥρας μητέρ' εἰς ἐμὴν ὕβρις her outrage towards.., E. Ba. 9; ἡ κατ' Ἀργείων (-ους codd. Priscian.) ὕ. S. Fr. 368; ἡ πρὸς τοὺς δημότας ὕ. 2. an outrage on the person, esp. violation, rape, Pi. P. 2.28, Lys. 1.2, etc.; παίδων ὕβρεις καὶ γυναικῶν αἰσχύνας Isoc. 4.114, cf. III used of a loss by sea, Pi. (v. ναυσίστονος), Acts 27:21. as masc., = cross ὑβριστής, a violent, overbearing man, κακῶν ῥεκτῆρα καὶ ὕβριν ἀνέρα Hes. Op. 191.
ὕβρις, ὑβρισεως, ἡ (from ὑπέρ ((see Curtius, p. 540); cf. Latinsuperbus, English 'uppishness')), from Homer down, the Sept. for גָּאון, גַּאֲוָה, זָדון, etc.;
a. insolence; impudence, pride, haughtiness.
b. a wrong springing from insolence, an injury, affront, insult (in Greek usage the mental injury and the wantonness of its infliction being prominent; cf. Cope on Aristotle, rhet. 1, 12, 26; 2, 2, 5; see ὑβριστής): properly, plural 2 Corinthians 12:10 (Hesychius ὕβρεις. τραύματα, ὀνείδη); tropically, injury inflicted by the violence of a tempest: Acts 27:10, 21 (τήν ἀπό τῶν ὀμβρων ὕβριν, Josephus, Antiquities 3, 6, 4; δείσασα θαλαττης ὕβριν, Anthol. 7, 291, 3; (cf. Pindar Pythagoras 1, 140)).

ὑποτύπωσις is found in the NT only in 1 Timothy 1:16, 2 Timothy 1:13, where it denotes not ";pattern,"; but ";sketch in outline,"; ";the outline without the substance,"; ";summary account"; : cf. Galen 19, II ὑποτυπώσεσί τε καὶ ὑπογραφαῖς (cf. 1 Peter 2:21) χρῶνται · καλοῦσι δὲ οὕτως αὐτοὶ τοὺς λόγους ὅσοι διὰ βραχέων ἑρμηνεύουσι τὴν ἔννοιαν τοῦ πράγματος (cited by Parry ad 2 Tim l.c.). For the verb see PSI IV. 429.10 (iii/B.C.) τὴν πρὸς Ἀπολλόδωρον συγγραφὴν ὑποτυπώσασθαι καὶ γράψαι.
