Vocabulary of the Greek NT

";manner,"; ";way."; With the adverbial phrase καθ᾽ ὅν τρόπον in Acts 15:11; Acts 27:25, cf. the letter of the prodigal son BGU III. 846.12 (ii/A.D.) (= LAE2, p. 187, Selections, p. 94) πεπαίδ ̣δευμαι καθ᾽ ὃν δ ̣ι ̣̑ τρόπον, where, if δι = δή, the meaning would be ";punished I have been in any case."; Wilcken, however, followed by Deissmann, suggests δι = δεῖ, ";punished I have been as I ought";; cf. P Oxy II. 237viii. 29 (A.D. 186) καθ᾽ ὂ ̣ν ̣ ἔδει τρόπον. Similar phrases are P Frankf 1.81 (B.C. 214–213) κ ̣[αθ᾽ ὁντ ]ινοῦν τρόπον, P Grenf II. 31.16 (B.C. 104) μὴ ἐπικαλεῖν περὶ τοῦ μέρους δανείου τρόπωι μηδενί, P Ryl II. 229.9 (A.D. 38) ἐκ παντὸς τρόπου, P Oxy II. 263.13 (A.D. 77) κατὰ μηδένα τρόπον, ib. 286.11 (A.D. 82) κατὰ πάντα τρόπον (cf. Romans 3:2), P Fay 21.12 (A.D. 134) ἄλλῳ ὁτῳδήτινι τρόπῳ ";any other way whatsoever"; (Edd.), and P Oxy XVII. 2133.16 (late iii/A.D.) καθ᾽ ὁνδήποτ᾽ οὖν τρόπον.

Michel 545.7 (ii/B.C.) gives a good ex. of τρόπος = ";manner of life,"; as in Hebrews 13:5, if we can trust the supplement, ζηλωτὴς δὲ γινόμενος τῶν ἀρίστων συνῳκείου τὸν μὲν [τρό ]πον ἀρετῇ καὶ σωφροσύνῃ, τό τε ἦθος κο ]σμιότητι καὶ εὐσ [χη ]μοσύνῃ : cf. also IG XII. 7 408.8 ἤθους κοσμιότητι καὶ τρόπων ἐπεικείᾳ.
