ἀντοφθαλμ-έω,
look in the face, meet face to face, ἀ. κατὰ πρόσωπον Plb. 18.46.12: hence, defy, withstand, τινί and πρός τινα, Id. 1.17.3, 2.24.1, etc., cf. LXX Wi. 12.14; ἀ τῷ ἀνέμῳ, of a ship, Acts 27:15; πάθεσι Longin. 34.4.
ἀντοφθαλμέω, ἀντοφθάλμω; (ἀντοφθαλμος looking in the eye)
1. properly, to look against or straight at.
2. metaphorically, to bear up against, withstand: τῷ ἀνέμῳ, of a ship, (cf. our 'look the wind in the eye,' 'face' (R. V.) the wind): Acts 27:15. (Wis. 12:14; often in Polybius; in ecclesiastical writings.)

";Verbum elegantius = resistere,"; so Blass on Acts 6:11, where the word is found in his ";β -text,"; μὴ δυνάμενοι οὗν ἀντοφθαλμεῖν (ἀντιλέγειν) τῇ ἀληθείᾳ : cf. the Polybian passage cited by Schweighäuser (with a wrong reference) in Lex Polyb. s.v., μὴ δύνασθαι τοῖς χρήμασιν ἀντοφθαλμεῖν. In the ordinary text of the NT ἀ. occurs only in Acts 27:15 of a vessel’s not being able to ";face"; the wind : cf. Wisdom of Solomon 12:14, of a king or prince who cannot ";look God in the face"; (ἀντοφθαλμῆσαί σοι), and Apoc. Baruch 7 (p. 89, ed. James) οὗ τὴν θέαν οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν ἀντοφθαλμῆσαι καὶ ἰδεῖν. For a similar usage see Barnab. 5:10, and cf. Clem. Rom. 34 of an idle workman—ὁ νωθρὸς καὶ παρειμένος οὐκ ἀντοφθαλμεῖ τῷ ἐργοπαρέκτῃ αὐτοῦ, ";does not look his employer in the face.";
The word was read in the printed text of P Par 63.43, but is removed by Mahaffy (P Petr III. p. 23), who reads ἀντ᾽ ὀφθαλμ [ῶ ]ν [θεμένου ]ς, ";keeping it before your eyes."; The parallel compound ἐ [π ]οφθαλμήσασα occurs in P Théad 19.9 (iv/A.D.) ";ayant jeté un œil d’envie sur le troupeau"; (Ed.).
