spring, leap, bound, of young horses, αἱ δ' ὅτε μὲν σκιρτῷεν ἐπὶ ζείδωρον ἄρουραν. ἀλλ' ὅτε δὴ ς. ἐπ' εὐρέα νῶτα θαλάσσης Il. 20.226, 228; πῶλοι ἐσκίρτων φόβῳ E. Ph. 1125; of goats, Theoc. 1.152; of the Bacchae, E. Ba. 446; ὀρχεῖσθε καὶ ς. καὶ χορεύετε Ar. Pl. 761, cf. V. 1305; ἅλλεσθαι καὶ ς . Pl. Lg. 653e: also of wind, σκιρτᾷ δ' ἀνέμων πνεύματα πάντων A. The word is found in a papyrus dealing with the heavenly bodies, P Par 19bis .13 (A.D. 138) (P. 237) Κρόνος ἐν Ὑδροχῷ, μοιρῶν Γ ̄, λεπτῶν Η ̄, ἐν τῷ Β ̄ στηριγμῷ, ἰδίῳ οἴκῳ, ὁρίοις Ἑρμοῦ. For στήριγμα cf. P Lond 121.509 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 100) ὁ ἐπὶ τοῦ ἁγίου στηρίγματος σεαυτὸν ἱδρύσας.
