προφῆτις, προφητιδος, ἡ (προφήτης), the Sept. for נְבִיאָה, a prophetess (Vulg., Tertullian prophetissa, prophetis), a woman to whom future events or things hidden from others are at times revealed, either by inspiration or by dreams and visions: Luke 2:36; Revelation 2:20. In Greek usage, a female who declares or interprets oracles (Euripides, Plato, Plutarch): ἡ προφῆτις τῆς ἀληθείας ἱστορία, Diodorus 1, 2.

For this proper name (Acts 12:13) cf. the inscr. on a gravestone at Alexandria of iii/B.C.—Preisigke 392 Ῥόδη Μύση μάμμη. Blass (ad Ac l.c.) points out that the name is found in myths and comedies : see e.g. Menander Fragm. 245.6, 546.5, Philemon fr. 84.
Ῥοδίνη is found as a proper name in the Christian inscr. CIG IV. 9484. The adj. ῥόδινος occurs in P Oxy III. 496.4 (articles in a dowry—A.D. 127) ζ ̣ώνας δύο, σανδυκίνη ̣ν ̣, ῥοδίνην, ";2 girdles, one red, the other rose-coloured,"; and P Goodsp Chicago 4.3 (medical prescription—ii/A.D.) κηρωτὴ ῥοδίνη, ";wax-ointment scented with rose."; See also P Petr II, 34 (b).6 (an account for unguents—iii/B.C.)
