This NT ἅπ. εἰρ. lends itself easily to illustration in the same sense as in Acts 18:27, ";urge forwards,"; ";encourage"; : P Par 63.165 (B.C. 164) (= P Petr III. p. 32) προτρεψαμένου τοὺς στρατηγοὺς καὶ τοὺς λαοὺς ἐ [πι ]δέξασθαι τὰ τῆς ἀσχολίας, ";instigated the strategi and the people to undertake the labour"; (Mahaffy), P Ryl II. 77.48 (A.D. 192) ἡμῶν δὲ προτρεπομένων αὐτὸν ἀναδέξασθαι τὴν κοσμητείαν, ";but when we urged him to undertake the office of cosmetes"; (Edd.), BGU I. 164.17 (ii/iii A.D.) ἐὰν μὴ τοῦτο ποιήσῃς καὶ προτρέψῃς αὐτὸν ἐλθεῖν, ib. II. 450.15 (ii/iii A.D.) προτρέψῃ αὐτὸν τ ̣[α ]κ ̣χ ̣ε ̣ως π ̣α ̣ρ ̣[αγ ]εν ̣ [σ ]θαι, P Oxy X. 1252 verso.32 (A.D.288–95) προετρεψάμην Ἀμμώνιον. . ἐν τῷ μεταξὼ (= ) ἀποδοῦναι, ";I urged Ammonius to discharge this in the meantime,"; OGIS 339.90 (c. B.C. 120) ἵνα. . . ζηλωταὶ μὲν τῶν καλλίστων γίνωνται, προτρέπωνται δὲ πρὸς ἀρετήν, Syll 326 (= .3 709).5 (c. B.C. 107) ἐπ [ ] τὰ κάλλιστα καὶ ἐνδοξότατα τὸν [βασ ]ιλέα προτρεπόμενος, and ib. 686 (=.31073).37 (A.D. 117) ἐπὶ πλεῖστον ἀγωνίσζεσθαι προτρεπόμενος. See also Kaibel 940.5 s.v. παραδειγματίζω.

For the subst. see P Oxy X. 1252 verso.27 (A.D. 288–95) οἵ ]τινες κατὰ μὲν τὴν προτροπὴν τῆς βουλῆς παρελθόντες ";who came forward at the behest of the senate,"; and for the adj. see Vett. Val. p. 55.4 προτρεπτικῶν καὶ διδασκαλικῶι λόγων.
