πρᾶξις, πράξεως, ἡ (πράσσω), from Homer down;
a. a doing, a mode of acting; a deed, act, transaction: universally, πράξεις τῶν ἀποστόλων (Griesbach; Rec. inserts ἁγίων, L Tr WH omit τῶν, Tdf. has simply πράξεις), the doings of (i. e. things done by) the apostles, in the inscription of the Acts; singular in an ethical sense: both good and bad, Matthew 16:27; in a bad sense, equivalent to wicked deed, crime, Luke 23:51; plural wicked doings (cf. our practices i. e. trickery; often so by Polybius): Acts 19:18; Romans 8:13; Colossians 3:9; (with κακῇ added, as Ev. Nicod. 1Ἰησοῦς ἐθεράπευσε δαιμονιζομένους ἀπό πράξεων κακῶν).

1. a doing, deed, act: Matthew 16:27; pl., Papyri ἀποσπτόλων , Ac, title,; in late writers especially of wicked deeds or practices (freq. in Polyb.): Luke 23:51; p1., Romans 8:13, Colossians 3:9; with ref. to magic (v. BS, 3235), Acts 19:18.

The semi technical use of this verb of the approach of the worshipper to God is frequent in the LXX, and is found septies in Heb, twice (10.1,22) without an obj. : cf. P Giss I. 20.24 (beg. ii/A.D.) (= Chrest. I. p. 124) ἀξιώσεις οὖν δίστιχον αὐτῶι γραφῆναι, ι ̣[να ἀξίως σου καὶ τῶν θεῶν ἀόκνως προσέλθῃ, of worship to be performed at a private shrine of the Dioscuri. See also Dio Cassius lvi. 9 τοῖς θεοῖς προσερχώμεθα. The verb is similarly used of approach to a court in P Oxy VIII. 1119.8 (A.D. 254) προσήλθομεν τῇ κρατίστῃ βουλῇ. Other exx. of προσέρχομαι c. dat. are P Oxy I. 76.22 (A.D. 179) οὐκ οὖσα δὲ προαιρέσεως προσέρχεσθαι τῇ τούτου κληρονομίᾳ, ";as I have no intention of entering on his inheritance"; (Edd.) (cf. adire hereditatem), and P Ryl II. 234.6 (ii/A.D.) μ ̣[ετ᾽ ὀ ]λίγον δέ μου προσελθόντος τῷ γ [ραμ ]ματεῖ. The absol. use is seen in P Oxy I. 40.4 (ii/iii A.D.) προσελθ [ό ]ν ̣τ [ος Ψάσνι ]ος καὶ εἰπόντος, ";Psasnis appeared and said.";
No adequate parallel has yet been found to the meaning ";consent to"; required by the context in 1 Timothy 6:3 : Field (Notes, p. 211) appear to favour Bentley’s conjecture προσέχει for προσέρχεται, but see Parry ad l. A proverbial phrase is found in a new Comic Fragment (P Berol 9941.14, .15)—ὄνος προσέρχεται (of one coming to a vacant seat at a banquet).
