ἀνεπίληπτος (L T Tr WH ἀνεπίλημπτος; see Mu, ἀνεπίληπτον (alpha privative and ἐπιλαμβάνω), properly, not apprehended, that cannot be laid hold of; hence, that cannot be reprehended, not open to censure, irreproachable (Tittmann i., p. 31; Trench, § ciii.): 1 Timothy 3:2; 1 Timothy 5:7; 1 Timothy 6:14. (Frequent in Greek writings from (Euripides and) Thucydides down.)

SYN.: ἀμεμπτος G273, ἀνέγκλητος G410. It is stronger than these, for it implies not only that the man is of good report, but that he is deservedly so (cf. MM, VGT, s.v.).

For this word, which is found ter in 1 Tim (1 Timothy 3:2, 1 Timothy 5:7, 1 Timothy 6:14, cf. P Tor I. 1vii. 15 (II/B.C.), where one of the conditions of a decree of amnesty for offences is stated to be τὰς παρακειμένας ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ συγγραφὰς ἀνεπιλήπτους εἶναι. See also P Tebt I. 5.48 (B.C. 118) ἀκατηγο [ρήου ]ς καὶ ἀνεπιλήπτους, ib. 61(b).237 f. (B.C. 118–7) κλήρους ἀ [σ ]υκοφαντή [τους ] καὶ ἀκατηγορήτους καὶ ἀνεπιλήπτου [ς πάσαις αἰτίαις ὄντ ]α ̣ς; and so ib. 72.176 (B.C. 114–3). Dibelius (on 1 Timothy 6:14) quotes a Jewish deed of manumission, Latyschev IosPE, II. 52.8 ff. κατὰ εὐχή [ν ] μου ἀνεπίληπτον καὶ ἀπα [ρ ]ενόχλητον ἀπὸ παντὸς κληρονόμου.
