P Tebt II. 272.19 (a medical fragment, late ii/A.D.), gives a literary citation for the word, εἰ γὰρ ἀνεξ [ί ]κακος ἐν τοι ̣̑ς ̣ [λ ]ο ̣ιποῖς ὢν μὴ ῢ ̣̣π ̣ο ̣μ ̣ένοι τὸ δίψ [ος ], ";for if he has general endurance but is nevertheless unable to bear the thirst"; (Edd.). Vettius Valens has it, p. 38.21, οὐκ ἄποροι καθίστανται, ἐπιτάραχοι δὲ καὶ ἀνεξίκακοι,· ἐγκρατεῖς περὶ τὰς τῶν αἰτίων ἐπιφοράς. Though Lucian (iud. voc. 9) is posterior in date to Paul and to Wisdom of Solomon 2:19 (ἀνεξικακία), he is adequate evidence for the earlier use of the word in ";profane"; Greek!
