II Pass., to be made trustworthy, give a pledge or warrant, πιστωθείς h.Merc. 536; ἐπεὶ δ' ἐπιστώθησαν E. IA 66; μοι . . ὅρκῳ πιστωθῆναι ἀπήμονά μ' οἴκαδ' ἀπάξειν bind yourselves to me by oath . ., Od. 15.436 .

2. feel trust or confidence, to be persuaded, ὄφρα . . πιστωθῆτον ἐνὶ θυμῷ 21.218; πιστωθεὶς ὅτι . . feeling confidence that . ., S. OC 1039 .

πιστόω, πιστῷ: 1 aorist passive ἐπιστωθην; (πιστός);

1. to make faithful, render trustworthy: τό ῤῆμα, 1 Kings 1:36; τινα ὅρκοις, Thucydides 4, 88; universally, to make firm, establish, 1 Chronicles 17:14.

2. Passive (the Sept. in various senses for נֶאֱמָן) and middle to be firmly persuaded of; to be assured of: τί (Opp. cyn. 3, 355. 417; Lucian, philops. 5), 2 Timothy 3:14; Hesychius ἐπιστώθη. ἐπείσθη, ἐπληροφορήθη. (In various other senses in secular authors from Homer down.)

";prostitute."; In PSI IV. 352.4 (B.C. 254-3) Artemidorus writes to Zeno—ἐν οἴνωι γάρ εἰσιν καὶ ἐμ πόρναις διὰ παντός, and in BGU IV. 1024vi. 4 (end iv/A.D.) a certain Diodemus is described as ἐρασθέντα πόρνης δημοσίας. . . συνεχῶς δὲ ἠσθ <έν >ει (see Archiv iii. p. 303) ὁ Διόδημος πρὸς τῆς πόρνη [ς ] κατὰ τὰς [ ]σπερίνας ὥρας. ὁ οὖν Διόδημος ἐφόνευσεν τὴν πόρνην —and in consequence was taken to prison. In P Oxy III. 528.18 (ii/A.D.) a man quotes his sister (and wife) as saying, ὁ Κόλυβος δὲ πόρνην με πεπύ (= οί)ηκεν, ";Colubus has made me a prostitute.";
