ἀνδρίζω: (ἀνήρ); to make a man of or make brave (Xenophon, oec. 5, 4). Middle present ἀνδρίζομαι; to show oneself a man, be brave: 1 Corinthians 16:13 (A. V. quit you like men). (Often in the Sept.; Sir. 34:25; 1 Macc. 2:64; Xenophon, Plato, Appian, Plutarch, others.)

P Petr II. 40 (a).12 (c. B.C. 233) (= Witkowski .2 p. 41) μὴ οὖν ὀλιγοψυχήσητε, ἀλλ᾽ ἀνδρίζεσθε —a good parallel to 1 Corinthians 16:13. Cf. also BGU IV. 1205.13 (B.C. 28) μόνον ἀνδραγάθι ἐν τῆι ἀριθμήσ [ι ], ";work hard"; or the like (διανδρ. in ib. 1206.13, etc.), P Oxy II. 291.8 (A.D. 25–6) καὶ προέγραψ [ά σοι ] ἀνδραγαθῖ [ν ], ";I have already written to you to be firm"; (Edd.). The adj. ἀνδρεῖος is found in a eulogy on the good deeds of the Emperor Aurelian, P Lips I. 119ii. 3 (A.D. 274) τηλικαῦτα ἀθρόως ἔχοντας ἀγαθὰ παρὰ τῆς ἀκηράτου μεγαλοδωρίας τοῦ ἀνδριοτάτου τῶν πώποτε Αὐτοκρατόρων Αὐρηλιανοῦ. The subst. is defined in Aristeas 199 (ed. Wendland) τί πέρας ἀνδρείας ἐστίν; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν · εἰ τὸ βουλευθὲν ὀρθῶς ἐν ταῖς τῶν κινδύνων πράξεσιν ἐπιτελοῖτο κατὰ πρόθεσιν, ";‘What is the the true aim of courage?’ And he said, ‘To execute in the hour of danger, in accordance with one’s plan, resolutions that have been rightly formed’"; (Thackeray). Cf. OGIS 339.71 (c. B.C. 120) προτρεπόμενος δὲ διὰ τῆς τοιαύτης φιλοδοξίας πρὸς ἄσκησιν καὶ φιλοπονίαν τοὺς νέους ἐξ ὧν αἱ τῶν νεωτέρων ψυχαὶ πρὸς ἀνδρείαν ἁμιλλώμεναι καλῶς ἄγονται τοῖς ἤθεσιν πρὸς ἀρετήν.
