II surpass, excel, πάντα περρέχοισ' ἄστρα, of the moon, Sapph. Supp. 25.9; overcome, gain the victory or advantage, Th. 5.7, 8.105 .

III Med., hold one's hands round or over another: hence, protect, defend, c. gen. pers., περίσχεο ( Ion. imper. aor. 2 Med. ) παιδὸς ἐῆος Il. 1.393: c. acc., οὕνεκά μιν περισχόμεθα Od. 9.199 .
2. hold fast by, cling to, c. gen., γούνων περισχομένη A.R. 4.82 (but c. acc., περίσχετο γούνατα χερσίν Id. 3.706 ); περιίσχετο κούρης Mosch. 2.11: hence, cleave to, be fond of a person or thing, γενσάμενοι τῶν ἡμετέρων ἀγαθῶν περιέξονται Hdt. 1.71, cf. 3.53, 5.40, 7.39, 160, etc.; τὠυτοῦ περιεχόμεθα we are compassing, aiming at the same end, Id. 3.72, cf. Plu. Them. 9; κρίσιν . . ἧς μᾶλλον περιέχομαι on which I place more reliance, Alciphr. 2.4 .
3. rarely c. inf., περιείχετο . . μένοντας μὴ ἐκλιπεῖν τὴν τάξιν clung to his resolution that they should stay and not leave their post, Hdt. 9.57 . Aeol. περρέχω, = ὑπερέχω, ὁπόσον τῷ ποδὶ περρέχει τᾶς γᾶς, τοῦτο χάρις, i.e. every inch of his stature is grace, Theoc. 30.3 .
περιέχω; 2 aorist περιέσχον; from Homer down; in the N. T. to surround, encompass; i. e.
a. to contain: of the subject-matter, contents, of a writing (ἡ βίβλος περιέχει τάς πράξεις, Diodorus 2, 1; (Josephus, contra Apion (1, 1); 1, 8, 2; 2, 4, 1; 2, 38, 1)), ἐπιστολήν περιέχουσαν τόν τύπον τοῦτον, a letter of which this is a sample, or a letter written after this form (cf. τύπος, 3), Acts 23:25 (L T Tr WH ἔχουσαν (cf. Grimm on 1 Macc. as below)) (τόν τρόπον τοῦτον, 1 Macc. 15:2; 2 Macc. 11:16); intransitive, (Buttmann, § 129, 17 n.; 144 (126) n.): περιέχει ἐν (τῇ) γραφή, it is contained in (holy) scripture, 1 Peter 2:6 R G T Tr WH; absolutely, περιέχει ἡ γραφή (our runs), followed by direct discourse, ibid. Lachmann; likewise, ὁ νόμος ὑμῶν περιέχει, Ev. Nicod. c. 4; with adverbs: περιέχειν οὕτως, 2 Macc. 9:18 2Macc. 11:22; καθώς περιέχει βίβλος Ανωχ, Test. xii. Patr., test. Levi 10; ὡς ἡ παράδοσις περιέχει, Eusebius, h. e. 3, 1; see Grimm on 1 Macc. 11:29.
b. equivalent to to take possession of, to seize: τινα, Luke 5:9 (2 Macc. 4:16; Josephus, b. j. 4, 10, 1).

";covetous"; : cf. P Magd 5 recto.7 (B.C. 221) πλεονέκτης ὤν. The adv. πλεονεκτικῶς occurs in OGIS 665.16 (A.D. 48) ὑπὸ τῶν πλεονεκτικῶς καὶ ἀναιδῶς ταῖς ἐξουσίαις ἀποχρωμένων. On the fragment of a vellum leaf, P Oxy XV. 1828 recto.4, belonging probably to iii/A.D., and containing ethical instructions, reference is made to ὁ ψε ]υ ̣στης καὶ ὁ πλεονέκτης [καὶ ὁ ἀποστε ]ρητής.
