παρα-κύπτω,

poet. παρκύπτω, stoop sideways, of the attitude of a bad harp-player, Ar. Ach. 16; lean over a railing, POxy. 475.23 (ii A.D.).

II stoop for the purpose of looking, and Song of Solomon 1:1-17 look sideways at, cast a careless glance on a thing, παρακύψαντ' ἐπὶ τὸν τῆς πόλεως πόλεμον D. 4.24.

2. peep out of a door or window, ἐκ θυρίδος Ar. Th. 797, cf. 799, V. 178; π. ὥσπερ γαλῆ Id. Ec. 924; of girls peeping after a lover, Id. Pax 982, 985, Theoc. 3.7; διὰ τῶν θυρίδων LXX Ca. 2.9; π. τὸν ἐραστὴν ἰδεῖν so as to see him, Plu. 2.766d: metaph., σωτηρία παρέκυψε a hope of safety peeped out, Ar. For the contrast in Mark 6:32 f. between ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ, ";in the boat,"; and πεζῇ (sc. ὁδῷ), ";by land,"; cf. PSI V. 446.13 (A.D. 133–7) μήτε πλέοντι μήτε πεζῇ βαδί [ζον ]τ ̣ι, and Artem. p. 182.1 τοῖς διαποροῦσι πότερον πεζῇ ἀπιτέον αὐτοῖς ἢ κατὰ πλοῦν συμβουλεύει πεζῆ. In P Tebt I. 5.28 (B.C. 118) the word is found with the two meanings ";on foot"; and ";by land,"; ὁμ ]οίως δὲ καὶ τοὺς πεζῆι ἀ ̣[ν ]απορε [υομένους ] ἐκ τῆς πόλεως τὴν [ἄ ]γουσαν πεζὴν ὁδὸν. . ., ";likewise persons who travel on foot up the country from Alexandria by the land-route which leads . . ."; (Edd.).
