Thayer's Expanded Definition

οὐκοῦν (from οὐκ and οὖν), adverb, not therefore; and since a speaker often introduces in this way his own opinion (see Krüger, as below), the particle is used affirmatively, therefore, then, the force of the negative disappearing. Hence, the saying of Pilate οὐκοῦν βασιλεύς εἰ σύ must be taken affirmatively: "then (since thou speakest of thy βασιλεία) thou art a king!" (German alsobist du doch ein König!), John 18:37 (cf. Buttmann, 249 (214)); but it is better to write οὐκοῦν, so that Pilate, arguing from the words of Christ, asks, not without irony, art thou not a king then? or in any case, thou art a king, art thou not? cf. Winer's Grammar, 512 (477). The difference between οὐκοῦν and οὐκοῦν is differently stated by different writers; cf. Herm. ad Vig., p. 792ff; Krüger, § 69, 51, 1 and 2; Kühner, § 508, 5 ii., p. 715ff, also the 3rd excurs. appended to his edition of Xenophon, memor.; (Bäumlein, Partikeln, pp. 191-198).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

for the Attic παρακαταθήκη (see Nägeli, p. 27) in the sense of ";deposit"; can be freely illustrated—P Par 54.51 (B.C. 163–161) (= UPZ i. p. 388) ἀπέχω παρὰ Ἀφροδεισίω παραθήκην (δραχμὰς Ἀ ̄φ ̄, ";I have received from Aphrodisius 1500 drachmae as deposit,"; P Hamb I. 2.9 (A.D. 59) ὁμολογοῦμεν ἔχειν παρά σου διὰ χειρὸς δι᾽ ἐγ [γ ]ύω [ν ] ἀλ ̣λ ̣η ̣λ ̣ων εἰς ἔκτισιν παραθήκην ἀργυρίου. . . δραχμὰς ἑξακοσίας, P Ryl II 324.16 (A.D. 139) ἀργυρίου δραχμὰς ἑξήκοντα παραθήκην [ἀκί ]νδυνον παντὸς [κι ]νδύνου, BGU II. 520.5 (Jan. A.D. 172) ὁμολογῶ ἔχω (l. ἔχειν) π [αρὰ σοῦ ] ἐν παραθήκῃ 300 drachmae to be paid back in May–June, and P Lond 943.9 (A.D. 227) (= III. p. 175) ἐκτείσ [ω κατ ]ὰ τὸν τῶν παραθηκῶν νόμον (a parallel to νόμος in Romans 7:12). Syll 814 (= .3 1199).4, a leaden tablet found in the temple of Demeter at Cnidus (Audollent Defixiones p. 5 cites authorities for dating it ii/i B.C.) devotes to Demeter and Kore and the other infernal gods τοὺς λαβόντας παρὰ Διοκλεῦς παραθή [καν ] καὶ μὴ ἀποδιδόντας ἀλ [λ ]᾽ ἀποστεροῦντας.

A special use is seen in Syll 848 (ii/B.C.), where Asandros of Beroea ἀνατίθησι τῶι Ἀπόλλωνι τῶι Πυθίωι ἐλευθέραν ἐμ παραθήκηι Εὐπορίαν τὴν αὑτοῦ παιδίσκην καταβεβληκυῖαν δραχμὰς Ἀλεξανδρείας διακοσίας. Dittenberger remarks that the practice of emancipation is varied : ἐμ παραθήκηι implies that the freedom of Euporia is committed as a charge to Apollo’s care.

For παραθήκη in the sense of ";pledge,"; ";security,"; we may refer to Syll 329 (= .3 742).51 (B.C. 85) with Dittenberger’s note.
