II dig up, [μῶλυ] Od. 10.305; κυκλάμινον Theoc. 5.123: Med., λίθους ὠρύξατο had stones dug or quarried, Hdt. 1.186: Pass., ὁ ὀρυσσόμενος χοῦς the soil that was dug up, ib. 185; ὑπὸ μεταλλείας ὀρύττεσθαι Pl. Criti. 114e.

III dig through, i. e. make a canal through (like διορύσσειν), τὸν ἰσθμὸν ὀ. Orac. ap. Hdt. 1.174; τὸ χωρίον ὀρώρυκτο Id. 1.186; of moles, burrow, either abs., as Arist. HA 606a2; or γῆν ὀ., Id. Mir. 842b4. bury, ἔγχος.. γαίας ὀρύξας ἔνθα μήτις ὄψεται (where γαίας depends on ἔνθα) S. Aj. 659, cf. X. Oec. 19.2. of a wrestler, dig into, gouge a tender part, τὠφθαλμώ Ar. Av. 442, cf. Pax 899, Philostr. VA 8.25; gouge out, ὀφθαλμὸν ὤρυττέν τις ὥσπερ ἰχθύος Antiph. 119.

ὀρύσσω: 1 aorist ὤρυξα; from Homer down; the Sept. for חָפַר, כָּרָה, etc.; to dig: to make τί by digging, Mark 12:1; τί ἐν τίνι, Matthew 21:33; equivalent to to make a pit, ἐν τῇ γῆ, Matthew 25:18 (here T Tr WH ὤρυξεν γῆν). (Compare: διορύσσω, ἐξορύσσω.)
